Amazon is furious about the recent unionization of its employees, especially after they won the union election in New York sometime back this year. The company went to the court to stop further unionization and is in a mood not to accept the so-called rebellion against it. The latest report confirms Amazon’s new step of firing managers and workers at a warehouse located on Staten Island for voting to unionize.
The recent dismissals came as a labor regulator realized the value in allegations Amazon’s anti-union plans violated the law.  Reports shared by Motherboard reveal the e-Commerce giant fired Tristan Duchin for not meeting the productivity targets. Mat Cusick lost his employment for job abandonment because he took leave to care for a loved one diagnosed with coronavirus. It is worth noticing both employees organized the Amazon Labor Union, which won the election to represent workers in New York in April. Duchin and Cusick say they fear vengeance was a primary cause in their dismissals.
According to the report posted by the New York Times, Amazon also removed six senior managers at a Staten Island warehouse. The dismissals reportedly emerged apart from the causal employee evaluation phase during an in-house review that led the union to win the election. Amazon acknowledged the firings of Cusick and Duchin and a change in the senior management. The e-commerce giant said the removals of the two employees from the office were because of their performance and not their support of any emerging cause.
The wave of firings came as an official at the National Labor Relations Board responsible for overseeing union election found merit in the allegation, saying Amazon has implied workers as the violation of the law throughout the necessary anti-union meetings. Those workers would lose their jobs or benefits if they voted for the labor union. The convergence of firings and regulatory scrutiny has created an awkward position for Amazon because it fights to keep efforts to unionize its services around the country.
The Labor Union’s victory at Staten Island emerged as a slow down for the company. Amazon has improved salary and other benefits to show itself as a caring employer. The e-Commerce giant recently took on a vision to be the world’s best and safest place to work. Amazon experiences an epidemic of worker organizing, but it has received mixed outcomes. In April 2022, Amazon employees voted against joining the ALU in a separate vote in a diverse warehouse located on Staten Island.
On the other hand, the e-Commerce workers in a Bessemer, Alabama warehouse seemed suspended to reject the Wholesale, Retail, and Department Store Union. Hundreds of challenged ballots still need a solution, which could change the results. Some employees have made groups to raise demands directly of the e-Commerce giant without voting on whether or not to be a part of the Amazon labor union.
According to Amazon, it fired Cusick because of not resume work after his extended leave expired. Likewise, Duchin lost his job because of problems in his performance, and he had already received numerous warnings from the company.
