Overview
Edifier’s audio pedigree has been managed to earn over more than 25 years of mainly manufacturing speakers, and it shows in the Hecate GX07 gaming earbuds. And these buds are meant to catch the eye as well as the ear: the GX07 stands out from the crowd with its angle design, RGB lighting, case wing doors (similar to gullwing doors on supercars), and, oh yes, this rather’subtle’ (not subtle) yellow colour. Most buds on the market are tame dark blobs or white AirPod imitators, which we’ve grown accustomed to over the years.
Design and Functions
Every time you open the case, you are reminded that the Hecate GX07 is unlike any other earbuds: the scissor/gullwing doors open to reveal RGB lights on the shell and white lamps on the ear plugs themselves to really help you stand out while wearing them (don’t worry, you can turn this off in the companion app). The angular design, combined with these RGB lights, are tell-tale signs of different aims at video game players – but I think it’s jazzed up enough to be cool.
One feature worth mentioning is the notifications that are overheard into your ear. When I say whispered, I mean it like someone is attempting to inform you a seductive seductive secret…that noise cancelling mode has been activated. It’s a little distracting at first because it sounds out of place and jarring, but I got used to it. If it becomes too annoying, you can disable it in the settings app under immediate volume.
In short, these buds are excellent for gaming, music and video, and general use.
When it came to gaming, the ‘Game Mode’ stood out to me the most – this activates a 60ms low-latency setting and assists you by ‘optimising gunfire and footsteps.’ With a good overall audio quality that is crisp, it’s clear where the gunfire is coming from during the combat royales.
Edifier’s audio pedigree glows through as it comes to audio outside of gaming. 8mm dynamic drivers with AAC and LHDC audio codec support are used to deliver sound. The sound is well balanced, with crisp and described highs and pleasantly rumbling bass notes in the backdrops.
The ANC is also a nice bonus feature. These earbuds have ambiance and noise cancelling modes via four mics, ensuring you get the most out of each setting. The noise nulling can reduce noise around you by -38dB, and while it isn’t the best on the market, it’s excellent for the price. The four extremely sensitive microphones pick up your voice well, but it’s the ambient noise cleanser that really makes a difference. This not only clarifies your voice but also eliminates any background noise.
Should you purchase the Hecate GX07 earphones?
Technically, aurally, and operationally, these are excellent gaming earplugs that can do it all – but they aren’t for everyone. If you want a few playing games earbuds that stand out from the crowd and like the jazzy design aesthetic of the GX07s, these are an easy recommendation.
