Overview of the game
Salt and Sacrifice place you in the role of a convicted prisoner in an empire corrupted by evil magic. Monstrous life forms now roam the lands, with the nefarious Mages who now hunt down each region being the source of all this defilement. You choose a life of Mage-hunting over execution, becoming a Marked Outrider sent to chase down these threatening Mages and gobble up their hearts to guarantee the kingdom’s survival. You awaken in Pardoner’s Vale, a centre area where you can engage in conversation with various NPCs, level up one’s personality class, craft and changes over time weapons and armor, and so on.
Port/ Mirrorgate
You’ll also find the Mirrorgate here, an awe-inspiring portal that enables you to relocate to different parts of the kingdom. And each is home to a slew of Mages that must be tracked down and killed, forming the core gameplay loop of Salt and Sacrifice. Exploring a region will lead you to evidence that will start a Mage Hunt, leaving a particulate trail for all of you to follow straight to your prey. Mages, like Monster Hunter’s beasties, aren’t limited to a single boss arena. You’ll have to fight them a few times as people roam the region, trying to summon styled mobs to slow you down. After dealing enough harm, you’ll eventually reach a final clash and enter a conventional boss battle.

Salt and Sacrifice’s Monster Hunter DNA
Monster Hunter DNA is also visible in how visitors craft and update weapons and armour in Salt and Sacrifice. Killing a single Mage and their awakened minions will reward you with a cash reward of body parts that can be used to craft a piece of gear or two. If you want to make a full set of armour or extra weapons, you’ll need to track down a same Mage again to obtain their suitable material and upgrade components. This can be accomplished by trying to return to a region and tracking them down once more, or by unlocking hidden stashes to reveal harder variants of each boss that will drop additional rewards upon defeat.
It’s also a real pity that Salt and Sacrifice falls short of its potential. Ska Studios has created an aspirational remake that combines elements from Monster Hunter and the Metroidvania genres into a sprawling 2D Souls-like. For the most part, this strange mash-up works, providing snappy combat, a labyrinthine world to start exploring, and strained boss fights against a diverse array of challenging foes.
