What you should know?
The good news is that Huawei’s MateBook D15 2021 appears to meet these stringent requirements. It’s a simple no-frills MacBook with respectable dimensions, build quality, specifications, and design, and it’s all available for a reasonable price. Did I mention it’s generally quite good?
Don’t get the impression that decency is just another word for monotonous. In fact, the 2020 model of the D15 has long become a personal fave here and at Expert Reviews, and it’s also been on our list of the best laptop computers for some time.
Price and competitiveness
The new MateBook D15 is only available in one configuration in the UK, and it costs £750. You get an 11th generation Core i5 processor, a 512GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, and a Full HD Display with a screen resolution for that price. Huawei is also including an unrestricted Bluetooth cursor valued £40 and a Sound X speaker worth £150 at the moment of this writing, which is quite generous.
The most obvious rival is from last year’s D15. The Core i3 version with a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM costs £499 right now, whereas the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U-powered edition is even cheaper at £449.
If you want a 2-in-1 15.6in multitouch laptop, Dell’s foldable Inspiron 15 is available for £729. It has the same CPU as the new D15, but only a 256GB SSD. If you need a 512GB drive, you must choose the i7/16GB model, that also ends up costing £909.
Design and construction quality
Physically, the 2021 D15 is a carbon copy of the 2020 model. I’m not sure if this is a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” or sluggishness on the portion of Huawei’s design team, so let’s assume the former. The laptop’s dimensions and weight are extremely portable (358 x 230 x 17mm and 1.56kg, respectively), and the remarkable strict Space Grey alloy alloy frame is equally lavish.
That implies the D15 is still as strong, clever, portable, and light as it was one year ago. Huawei’s mass and flexibility fears have enlarged to the 65W power source, which is a 160g slimline event with a detachable third pointed end.
Another blemish is that, as is customary with Huawei notebooks, the webcam is a pop-up event lurking beneath a phoney button among F6 and F7. It’s a stupid design whose only benefit is that it allows others to see right up your nasal passages during Zoom chatrooms. The combined strength tab and fingerprint reader, which are well disengaged from the real keyboard, has been more thoughtfully positioned.
Audio and visuals
The 2020 D15’s display and speaker system were both a little shoddy, so it’s unfortunate that they haven’t been enhanced at all in this iterative process. The 1,920 x 1,080 IPS screen has maximum lighting of only 135cd/m2 (very low), with sRGB coverage as well as a volume of 55.8 and 57.2 percent, respectively. Delta E image quality was also poor at 6.04, with only the dynamic range of 1,365:1 meeting anticipations.
Subjectively, it appears better than the figures indicate, thanks to TÃœV Rheinland’s Flicker-Free and Lowered Blue Light accreditations, as well as a matte texture that reduces reflections.
