Quality comedy games are not that easy to find, but High on Life is one game that makes you feel like you have struck gold. This game knows how to give you a good time because this first-person shooter is delightfully inappropriate and its comedic premise and characters do not take anything seriously. It starts with aliens taking over the Earth and kidnapping humans for smoking as hallucinogenic drugs. You have to take revenge from the extraterrestrial drug cartel behind it. The stars of the show will accompany you on this journey, which are the extremely rude weapons.
Gatlians
Not only are they tools of destruction, but they are also the most important characters of the story. Named Gatlians, these animate weapons are the best thing about this adventure, which includes the flustered pistol named Kenny that has been voiced by Justin Roland of Rick &Morty. There is also the sniper-rifle named Sweezy, which is quite foul-mouthed and the wholesome shotgun Gus voiced by JB Smoove. There is a lot of character development and amusing dialogue and by the time the game ends, you will not want to say goodbye.
A lot of heart
This is mostly because of the solid writing of High on Life that includes dumb gags, a number of TV screens that air idiotic TV shows and rants laden with curses. The campaign lasts for only eight hours, but has very interesting levels like one that has an intentionally irritating alien following you around and rambling on until you are able to unlock the ability of killing him.
A lot of jokes that make up High on Life are like comedy that may not suit everyone, but if you like classic comedy games, you are certainly going to enjoy them. Some of the shock humor and cursing may seem lazy, but most of the time the silly jokes and dialogue are able to land.
The weapons
When you are not using the guns to shoot things, you can use them as allies for getting through different levels with the use of their alternate-fire modes that have been named ‘trick hole’. This means that they can be used for things beyond killing. For instance, you can use Sweezyfor shooting bubbles that help slow down time in an area.
Running around while on the hunt for collectibles and loot boxes is a lot of fun. When you continue unlocking abilities and weapons, you will be able to get access to new secrets and in locations you have already explored, or other areas.
There are some memorable yet crazy fights that High on Life offers and you will be facing one alien criminal after the other. These fights will challenge you and only add to your victory in the end.
The Verdict
You will find High On Life to be an absurd, irreverent shooter that has a silly storing and setting, but its outrageous humor and the goofy guns make it shine. In the first act, you may find the combat to be on the sloppy side, but once you get some new tools, the game rises to the occasion and lets you enjoy it all.
