Asus is the one brand that will immediately come to mind when you are looking for dedicated gaming phones. The ROG (Republic of Gamers) phone was introduced in 2018 and it has now become the go-to option for all mobile gamers, even though there are numerous other brands that compete with it. The ROG Phone 6 series has four devices and the cheapest of them is the regular 6 that is priced at below $1,000.
Design and build
The ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro have lots of similarities, which include design. It is available in both white and black and has a gamer aesthetic without being garish or wacky. The right side of the phone has a large light strip, which you can customize in ‘Settings’. There is also a secondary display that you can use for accessory details and battery percentage.
The back of the phone has branding and splashes of color, but the camera moduleis an irregular hexagonal shape that extends across the top and this makes it quirky. There are two USB-C ports, one at the bottom and another on the left, which allows you to play and charge the phone at the same time. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack, which gives you a way to use wired headphones.
The 6.78inch gaming phone is quite bulky since it weighs 239g, which makes it one of the heaviest devices out there. It is also 10.3mm thick and this means that the phone is not easily pocketable.
Display and audio
The ROG Phone 6 has a 1080×2448 OLED panel, which means it boasts a 20.4:9 aspect ratio. The 165Hz refresh rate is also a major feature and put together with 720Hz touch sampling, it is responsive and slick. The phone will give you an outstanding performance, as the screen will deliver vibrant and rich colors that really pop, thereby offering an enhanced gaming experience.
It offers great detail and there is also a fingerprint scanner under the display, which is quite impressive. This makes it easy to set up and is also very quick. There is also a 12Mp selfie camera that you can use for face unlocking, which is quite fast. There are also dual front-facing stereo speakers that produce sound superior to most devices. The sound is clear, even when you connect it to headphones, which helps them deliver an excellent gaming experience.
Specs & performance
The ROG Phone 6 boasts the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, which is 5G-enabled. It is very capable and can offer excellent performance, as it blazes through whatever you throw at it. The touch sampling and refresh rate deliver a responsive and slick experience. There are also lots of accessories, such as the AeroActive Cooler 6 fan that can be attached through the USB-C port. You can also use the Kunai 3 Gamepad that gives you an effective controller-like experience.
The Verdict
The ROG Phone 6 also boasts two impressive cameras and it has a generous battery capacity, which has great battery life. With a stunning display, it works as a great gaming phone.
