Back in 2019, Fire Emblem Engage had passed its tests with Fire Emblem: Three Houses and had put in some study sessions. Now, it made the decision of taking a step away from teaching and time management. Sure, it still boasts a number of socializing aspects and base activities with the team, but Engage has opted to once more turn to the roots of the series and shine the spotlight on tactical combat.
Every aspect shows a reverence for the past, which includes the spirits of legendary heroes that were part of the previous games. While the Fire Emblem Engage’s classic story of good vs. evil may not be able to hit the same notes as its predecessor, but the adventure of the Divine Dragon still manages to stand out amongst its peers on its own merit and also as a great tribute to the legacy of Fire Emblem.
The storyline
The idea of 12 rings housing the spirits of the previous protagonists of Fire Emblem may seem a bit weird initially, but it turns out to be fun when you see the familiar faces. These include Byleth, Ike, Marth and Celica, amongst others, who spar with you, advise you and also become your battle companions while you are trying to collect the 12 rings in order to defeat the big bad Fell Dragon interested in corrupting them.
The Fire Emblem Engage is a 60 hour adventure that celebrates the history of some of its most powerful characters, but you do not feel left out at all. You are a Divine Dragon named Alear by default and its story will remain the driving force behind your journey.
The battle
You should bear in mind that the Emblem Rings really shine when they go into battle. You will be able to benefit from a ton of skills and bonuses when you are equipped with one. The skills inherited by your team will depend on the ring you are using and these range from repositioning allies and attacking twice before enemies can respond to altering terrain effects for controlling the battlefield.
You can also ‘engage’ their true power, which can give you extremely powerful and unique weapons. You can get access to attacks that you would not be able to use normally. This gives room for some flashy and fun attack animations that are worth checking out.
Emblem rings
The good thing about Emblem rings is that each of them is unique, so their abilities don’t come off as same. A lot of these abilities also come with small modifiers, which are also quite interesting, but this will depend on the unit type. It gives you more layers of customization and strategy, which can be fun to experiment with.
You can pair your teammates with various Emblem Rings and there is no wrong answer; there are a ton of possibilities to explore. You will find that nearly all aspects of battle have been fine-tuned and the visuals are quite enhanced
The Verdict
The beauty of Fire Emblem Engage is that it has a simple yet fun story that is able to celebrate the history of the series and gives you tons of room for strategy and customization.
