One Piece has always been an action-heavy heavy game and One Piece Odyssey is also a classic RPG that makes for a great game for anyone who enjoys lots of action. It boasts an art style that seems to be one-of-a-kind and it is filled with amusing and fantastical creatures, along with battles as well as anime and manga. All of these make for some of the coolest fights and special attacks that you will see in an RPG.
The story
Luffy finds himself marooned with his crew on Warford and they do not meet the two main characters on the mysterious island for quite a while. Adio and Lim do not trust pirates because of which they steal the powers of the Straw Hats. Then comes a grand story that unfolds on two fronts. The first is their adventure in Warford in which Lim and Adio receive assistance from the Straw Hats for fighting elemental colossi that have caused the storm surrounding the island.
The second is in a world of memory called Memoria that Lim’s special ability has created and enables the Straw Hat crew to revisit specific events and locations in their history. The Odyssey story is certainly appealing because it comes with unique quirks that you are not likely to find elsewhere.
One Piece fans
However, it is important to note that One Piece Odyssey is directly aimed at fans of One Piece, as it explores some of the show’s biggest surprises and picks up after 750 episodes. Therefore, anyone who is new to the show might not enjoy the game as much, until they become truly invested.
The combat
You will find that the combat in One Piece Odyssey is refreshingly simple, but this could also be a double-edged sword. Since it is a traditional turn-based combat, it means that a damage type of speed, power, or technique has been assigned to each enemy, party member and boss. The good thing here is that you are free to choose whatever character you want in the first move.
The only complication you will come across is the fact that the combat field has multiple zones and you have to defeat all the enemies in your zone to be able to move onto the next.
No strategy
Another good thing about One Piece Odyssey is that 95% of the battles do not require a strategy on your part and you cannot make adjustments to the difficulty either. A lot of this is because of the Dramatic Scenes system that gives you an additional objective when you are dealing with the enemy. Mostly it is very simple, but they give you an astronomical bonus.
The Verdict
You will find that playing One Piece Odyssey is a joy and most of it has to do with the world, story, characters and art of One Piece. While adding some way of adjusting the difficulty would have been a good thing, the fights are undoubtedly satisfying and it has everything from the humor, heart and soul that you want to see in a game.
