Sony announced that it was working on a new accessibility controller kit for PlayStation V, known as Project Leonardo. It is a highly customizable controller to meet an array of accessibility requirements.
According to an official blog post, Sony consult worked with SpecialEffect and AbleGamers – video game accessibility advocates, to produce a highly configurable controller that can work in tandem with different third-party accessibility equipment.
Features of Sony’s Leonardo Kit
Sony’s Leonardo accessibility controller kit includes PlayStation V face and trigger buttons that players can swap around a wide circular gamepad. They can also switch a joystick or reposition it to the gamepad.
The kit features accessories in various sizes and shapes, allowing players to find the most suitable configuration for their strength, motion range, and specific physical requirements. It includes four 3.5mm aux jacks, which are as same as Microsoft Adaptive Controller, to plug in third-party accessibility accessories.
Leonardo Accessibility controller kit has numerous smaller M&M shaped and scalloped scoop buttons. It is adaptable to an array of accessibility requirements. Players can use it as a standalone controller or a pair. It is also convenient to use Leonardo in concert with the PlayStation V’s DualSense wireless controller.
The new accessibility controller has physical customization capabilities. It lets players use various functions and buttons to save three profiles of configuration settings to make controller use easy.
No More Shortage of the PlayStation V
While Sony’s Project Leonardo’s development is underway, the company has not said anything about its final release date. On the other hand, players want the PlayStation V not to give them a tough time finding one at retailers worldwide, though the company claims the market no longer has a shortage of PS5.
Jim Ryan, the gaming boss at Sony, said everyone wants easy access to the PlayStation V through global retailers. Sony has sold about thirty million consoles at this time, which is five million more sales number than the last time the company disclosed in November 2022.
Sony launched its PS5 in November 2020, and it was easy to get one until August 2022. One has to either be lucky or ready to pay more than the console’s retail price to get the equipment for its lifespan. Recently, players purchased it through a $550 bundle, which comprised the PlayStation V with disk drive and a game like God of War Ragnarök. However, it was a steep markup for those willing to buy the digital console for $399.99.
During the CES presentation, Sony acknowledged PlayStation fans’ patience as the company has been managing unprecedented demand in the middle of global challenges in the last two years. At the time of writing, the PS5 is out of stock at most online shops, including GameStop and Best Buy, though the former says one of its locations has the regular PS5 in stock. Sony allows players to add a digital console edition to their carts if they sign in, even when the disk version lists that unavailable.
