Netflix has recently detailed its plans to crack down on outside usage of an account intended to serve one household. The streaming giant has introduced a few ways to prevent account sharing outside the household. It will ask users to pay additional money if they want to use the streaming service other than their house for long periods.
The company also shared terms and conditions explaining how it would limit the experience within a family. Users can check out the details on the FAQ pages on Netflix’s official site for Cost Rica, Peru, and Chile, where it has already begun checking additional membership fees to control account sharing.
Terms and Exemptions Â
According to Netflix’s new terms, people will need to define the primary location through their televisions. They will use the same Wi-Fi to connect all devices and accounts they use for their television’s connectivity.
The Wi-Fi-connected TV they use to sign into their Netflix accounts sets a primary location. Any devices signed into the Netflix account on the Wi-Fi network will be connected to the primary spot and use the services.
If you do not have a television or do not set a primary location, Netflix will do it according to your device IDs, IP address, and activity. Subsequently, members of the same household can use Netflix on their devices by launching the app at home every month.
The support page of the Netflix site tells how you can verify if your devices have connectivity with the primary location by connecting to the Wi-Fi at the spot and opening the Netflix website or service to watch something every 31 days.
The new terms raise some questions, including what a user has a device before leaving the house for a long journey but rarely uses that gadget at home. Such devices are more likely to be without connection with your household when you want to watch something on the go.
Users can ask the primary account holders to confirm the device for them. Netflix will send the account holder a code they can relay to the traveler. The traveling member can use Netflix services after getting a successful verification for a week without any extra prompt.
However, the information detailing if a user can request temporary codes many times in a row is vague. Some youngsters, for instance, would request a code from their elders every seven days instead of paying for individual Netflix services. These conditions set by the streaming company will prevent people from using its services through VPN connections for a long time.
Efforts to Get More Paying Members
Netflix has made many efforts to get more paying members for its services. It unveiled a $6.99 advertisement-monthly plan in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, Korea, Brazil, and Japan in November 2022. It also introduced tools to start subscription-based services and move a profile from one membership to another to prevent account sharing.
All these efforts brought more subscribers to Netflix’s services. The company added 7.7 million subscribers during its recent Q4 quarterly results in 2022, which is much higher than what it anticipated.
