The Ultimate Controller is undoubtedly a major upgrade in all the important areas. You will find that it is more feature-friendly and looks and feels better in every way. Most importantly, its charging dock is also quite slick and it comes at a price tag of just $69.99.
Design and features
The 8BitDo Ultimate controller boasts rear paddles and also offers the ability of quickly changing button functionality, allowing you to customize the trigger and stick sensitivity. You can also modify the intensity of vibration and use their software for assigning macros to one button. As opposed to previous controllers, this one has a boxy shape and its handles are thicker, offsetting thumbsticks.
At first glance, you might think it is an Xbox controller because it does seem to have the same functionality and shape. But, you will see fundamental differences. There are five menu buttons on the Ultimate controller near its center. There is a start, a star, a profile switcher, a select and a home button.
The Ultimate Controller also comes with a rechargeable battery that can last for 22 hours and the charging cradle is quite sleek. It has a 2.4g dongle that has to be connected to a PC. The Ultimate Controller can work with Windows, Nintendo Switch and SteamOS. It weighs just 228 grams and is available in black and white.
Software
The Ultimate Software from 8BitDo is what makes the controller so special. It enables you to change almost every aspect of the controller’s functionality. There are three profiles available for you to choose from. Buttons can be remapped and you can also adjust the sensitivity of the triggers and thumbsticks. Crafting macros through the press of a single button and vibration modification is also possible. All of this can be done from your Android, Mac, iPhone, or PC.
Gaming performance
As far as gaming potential is concerned, you will find absolutely no complaints where the Ultimate Controller is concerned. The 22-hour battery life is great and it can pair easily with just a button. Once you are done with pairing, you will find the controller a joy to use. Since it has more ergonomic handles, holding the controller is very easy.
The Ultimate Controller also comes with Hall Effect Sensing joysticks that use magnets for tracking potential input. The responsive and precise stick feels great. You can use the controller via a wired connection, as it comes with a USB-C charging cable. If you prefer wireless, you will be pleased to see that it has a strong connection.

The 8BitDo Ultimate Controller is undoubtedly one of the best controllers that the company has produced so far. Even the small changes have made a significant difference and you have a very polished device at your disposal. It comes off as a complete package, especially considering how economically it has been priced.
