The Galaxy Z Flip from Samsung has been leading the charge of the foldable clamshell phone, but it may find some competition coming its way with the launch of the Oppo Find N2 Flip in Europe. The first flip phone from Oppo and the third foldable one, is quite similar to Samsung’s Z Flip 4. However, it comes with a more capable camera, an improved hinge and a larger cover display, making it a more practical option, given its affordable price tag.
Design and build
The Oppodevice has a 6.8 inch screen when open and it forms a perfect square when it closes in half. The hinge gives Oppo an edge over Samsung because the ‘Flexion’ hinge has a waterdrop shape that allows the screen to shut completely when folded and there is no gap. This makes the phone feel sturdier and it also protects it from dust, giving it a premium feel.
There is a plastic case included in the box and the gold edition of the Find N2 Flip is only available in China. The global edition can be found in purple and black.
Screen and speakers
The Find N2 Flip has 2 screens and the one that does not fold may seem more interesting. The cover display is about 3.26 inch, much larger than on any other flip phone. Its portrait orientation also makes it unique. The inner screen is 6.8 inch that boasts an LTPO AMOLED panel that comes with a dynamic refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz.
It also has an anti-glare matt finish, which looks great. It does have a small crease, but it is barely noticeable. The stereo speakers included in the Find N2 Flip also come as a surprise because they are a lot punchier than you expect them to be.
Specs and performance
The MediaTek’sDimensity 9000+ chipset has been added to the Find N2 Flip, which may not be the latest chip, but it is still quite powerful. It offers fluid and smooth day-to-day performance and you can get enough horsepower to play games and make full use of the 120Hz display. It comes with 8GB of RAM and storage is impressive at 256GB.
Camera and video
Samsung’s Flips have not been able to deliver the best quality in terms of cameras and while they have made improvements, Oppo takes things further. The main lens of the Find N2 Flip is a 50Mp, f/1.8 shooter that uses an IMX890 sensor from Sony. It can give you some very beautiful shots, with vibrant and punchy colors. It comes with a default 2x zoom and even at night, the camera offers deep dynamic range.
There is also an 8MP ultrawide, which is not as impressive, but a good extra option. There is a 32Mp punch-hole camera for selfies and the results are quite good.
Battery
Oppo has equipped its flip phone with a 4300mAh battery, which allows it to last all day, as long as you do not push the phone too hard.
The Verdict
The Oppo Find N2 Flip is undoubtedly an impressive and astonishing device and while Samsung may be slicker and offer a bit more, the price makes Oppo’s offering hard to resist.
