Considering that the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes that were introduced in 2019 and 2020, respectively, were of high quality, the same was expected from the remake of Resident Evil 4. But, it appears that Capcom has managed to outdo itself this time around because of 2023 remake of the action-horror game introduced first in 2005 is downright amazing.
Everything improved
The campaign has been fully revitalized in such a manner that it actually manages to one up the original in nearly every way. You will find that the Spanish countryside setting is a tad more sinister, the tightened pacing means no time is wasted and the modernized controls do wonders for the game’s signature dynamic shooting mechanics.
If you try out the Resident Evil 4 original, you will realize just how badly it needed a remake and what a good job they have done in making the improvements.
The luxuries
The Resident Evil 4 remake comes with luxuries like targeting and simultaneous twin-stick movements gives you better freedom of movement and this allows you to enjoy the area-specific damage effects as well. They have managed to file down a number of rough edges that existed in the original, such as how you only need a click of a button to smash barrels and crates instead of a knife swing.
Likewise, you can switch weapons almost instantly instead of having to pause and a combat knife can also be used for dealing with enemy attacks. But, the most important part is that thanks to the overhaul, the combat has become a lot more enjoyable than it used to be. It is more fluid and it accomplishes this without making compromises on any of the challenges.
The enemies
You will also find that the enemies in the Resident Evil 4 remake move in dangerous and erratic ways and come become overwhelming quickly, unless you make quick decisions and prioritize your targets. Moreover, the enemies also appear to have some new tricks up their sleeves for tripping you up, such as the bear traps that the villagers will lay down in the middle of a fight for keeping you on your toes.
Nonetheless, you are also provided with a much more improved toolset for helping you survive, but you also require your reflexes and wits to keep up. You can choose from the difficulty levels available, but no matter which one you opt for, the best part is that they continue to shuffle the enemy times. This works in your favor because it means that you cannot opt for a one-size fits all strategy.
Another appealing feature of the game is that every element that you have in your surroundings has a tactile nature and it can be used to serve a tactical advantage. This is certainly helpful because ammunition is not that easily available and you do not want to waste it.
The Verdict
Whether you have played the original, or are trying the game for the first time, you will find Resident Evil 4 remake a high quality action-heavy horror game that will keep you occupied.
