There have been lots of games that offer you the opportunity of playing the scion of the hereafter, but there is a change of pace in Have a Nice Death because this is where you play Death himself. The game is full of dry and dark workplace humor, as Death is running a rather quirky and unique new underworld order. Here death has been reimagined as a soulless corporation and there is some excellent combat that will keep you on your toes.
The combat and chapters
The Stygian adventure provides you with responsive and fast combat and there are a variety of techniques that you have to master. There are numerous swappable scythes that have numerous special attacks each. Plus, magic spells can be used for dealing with the undead and every level will offer you secondary weapons randomly.
These range from sorcery that can be used for summoning a flock of crows and a massive hammer. There is no shortage of variety in dustups, as there is plenty of dashing, jumping and powerful finishers. A different method of death exists in every chapter, from poisoning to war and it is loaded with new enemy types. There are charming and creative designs, both in visual terms as well as how they carry out the attacks. Moreover, the soundtrack is also a good one and works with the mayhem.
The difficulty
As you continue to descend into darkness, you will be required to collect green, red and blue Curse cards and these are actually bonuses that you can collect and use later. These come in handy when you need to get your health back for fighting an enemy. But, you should also bear in mind that the difficulty level is quite high where the fights are concerned. This does become frustrating because you have limited defensive options. You have to memorize patterns because there is a very small margin of error.
There are three categories in which you can divide the upgrades that you earn and they vanish as soon as you are slain. First off, your stats increase permanently. The second comprises of things that don’t necessarily make you stronger, but do give you good items to boost your chances of a good run. The last one is where you add more passives or abilities and this is the main focus in the game.
The challenge
It is not easy for you to complete the levels to see the final boss. There is the option of unlocking elevators that can help you skip stages and take you to some of the big bosses, but it means missing out on upgrades on the levels you skip. But, there is always new lore to keep you entertained. The various departments of the afterlife are in turmoil and you will learn how this bureaucracy works. There is also new dialogue and some characters of humorous storylines.
The Verdict
At the end of the day, you will find Have a Nice Death a satisfying and punishing roguelike, which has some tough boss fights.
