Honor had once been Huawei’s budget wing, but it has become quite independent since then, which has allowed it to go from the mid-range market to coming up with full-on flagship devices. The company released the Magic Vs this year to compete with Samsung’s foldable line and now it has come up with a more traditional Magic 5.
Design and build
The Magic 5 Pro from honor follows the traditional route of flagship phone design. It is a huge slab that is made up of metal and curved glass and has a big, round camera module on the rear. The phone is large because of its 6.8inch screen and is quite heavy as well. But, since its thickness is about 8.8mm, it is considerably slender than other phones out there and this makes it more comfortable to hold.
The most striking element of the Magic 5 Pro are the cameras on both sides. The selfie camera on the front comes with a depth sensor, which is a rarity. This means there is a pill-shaped cutout on the front, but it is on the corner instead of the center. There is a huge circular camera on the back, which boasts three lenses. There are several colors available, including Black and Meadow Green. Purple, blue and orange are only available in China.
Screen and speakers
There are two key strengths of the Honor Magic 5 Pro and the screen is one. The 6.8inch OLED panel uses the LTPO technology for offering a refresh rate of maximum 120Hz, which means the performance is silky smooth and battery life is optimized. The screen is curved from all edges, which makes it comfortable and gives it a symmetrical look. The device has a 1312×2848 resolution and there is a display chipset for HDR10+ support and color accuracy.
Eye health has also been one of the focus when it comes to the screen. Honor claims to have reduced screen flickering and used dynamic dimming tech to protect your vision and also sleep cycle. The panel looks colorful, bright and crisp. As for the speakers, Magic 5 Pro comes with a stereo setup, but it is nothing exceptional and actually comes off as a bit tinny.
Specs and performance
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powers the Magic 5 Pro, which is the fastest chipset available for Android devices. It comes with 12GB of RAM and storage of 512GB. The phone is quite fast and it will be able to handle any tasks that you throw at it.
As for connectivity, the device comes with 5G support, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6. You can use the selfie camera for face unlock, or the fingerprint scanner that has been built into the display.
Camera
The camera department is where the Magic 5 Pro’s second strength lies. The triple rear camera boasts 50Mp lenses. The main one uses a large 1/1.12inch sensor that comes with OIS, allowing crisp and clear photos. There is also a 50Mp ultrawidethat has a smaller sensor, which struggles a bit in dark conditions. There is also a 3.5x zoom periscope lens that comes with OIS and gives impressive photos. The selfie camera is 12Mp and takes quite decent shots.
The Verdict
The Magic 5 Pro comes with a huge battery that delivers what it claims and Honor has repeated its magic with this flagship device.
