There was a time when Huawei had become focused on becoming the smartphone ruler, but it has now shifted towards becoming a best-selling brand of smart devices. The latest attempt of the company to climb to the top spot is in the form of the Huawei Band 7, which combines fashion and fitness and that too at a good price point. But, there is a sea of competition it has to go through. Let’s see how it fares.
Design and build
In the decade after the first smartwatch was introduced, there have been several different ‘types’ of products that have been introduced. The smart band, which is also called an activity tracker, is the most ubiquitous of the lot. They are able to offer rudimentary features and durability, which are mostly geared towards fitness and not much else. Many manufacturers have tried their hand in this category and used various tricks.
The Band 7 from Huawei is a cheap option, but not exactly a bargain-bucket product and it still manages to be premium without a hefty price tag to go with it. The smart band is available in red, pink, black and green shades and it is good to have shades other than black to choose from. Matt plastic is used for the device itself, which gives a nice sturdy feeling. There is a button on the right and different sensors underneath.
It is quite light on the wrist, given that it weighs just 16g without the strap, and it is just 9.9mm thick. The strap is made from rubber/plastic composite, which makes it relatively breathable.
Display
The success of any fitness tracker depends on screen quality, as it has to be legible in all lighting conditions and should be sharp enough to read without any issues and big enough for displaying all necessary information. The Band 7 has used a good quality display. It measures 4.7 inch, which is enough to display the required information.
The best part is that it offers an always on display at this price point, which does impact the battery, but is a significant improvement. The Band 7 is able to function as a watch replacement thanks to this feature.
Software and features
Since it is a smart band and not a smartwatch, the expectations from the Band 7 should be lower from a software perspective because its primary purpose is to show time and track health information. Therefore, it comes as a surprise that the Band 7 has some good software features considering its price.
Huawei has added a custom operating system and it boasts a set of options. The company can introduce a software update for expanding these options. Not only does it have the suite of health and fitness tracking functions, there is also a torch, alarms, the ability of pinging your phone if it is lost and more.
You can also get notifications, but there cannot be any meaningful interaction with them. You can interact with the screen and side button and use the Huawei Health app for changing the watch face and more.
The Verdict
Even though Huawei may have made exaggerated claims about the battery life, the Band 7 certainly makes an impression and is a good value smart band.
