Now owned by Lenovo, Motorola has made a comeback in the smartphone market and it is doing a pretty decent job. The Motorola Edge 40 Pro has been designed to go toe-to-toe with high-end devices from the likes of Samsung and Apple. The Edge 40 Pro could actually be a tempting option for gamers, who want the specs without compromising on the looks.
Design and build
In the last year or two, Motorola appears to have established a simple yet firm design language and the Edge 40 Pro seems to have stuck to the same.
The sleek device boasting curved glass is available in both blue and black finish and it is relatively lightweight and slim for its size, weighing 199g and about 8.6mm thick. The design is quite understated, as the rear has a compact camera module and a small ‘M’ logo. The matt glass is smooth to touch and durability gets a boost with the use of Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back.
Another practical element is the IP68 rating, which means the Edge 40 Pro is safe from water and dust.
Screen and speakers
One of the most appealing features of the Edge 40 Pro is the display, which is Full HD+ and has a 165Hz refresh rate, which makes it one of the fastest ones in the market in a non-gaming device. This means that you can enjoy fast frame rates and silky smooth animations. The quad-curvature of the glass is also an attractive aspect. The left and right have steeper curves, while the top and bottom have a more subtle effect.
The phone does not just look good, but also feels the same and you can hold it comfortably. As far as audio is concerned, the phone comes with stereo speakers that have Dolby Atmos support and they are punchy.
Specs and performance
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been chosen for the Motorola Edge 40 Pro and it is currently the most powerful chip that can be found in an Android device. Hence, it is safe to assume that the phone is not lacking in terms of capability. It comes with 12GB of RAM, along with options of storage of 256GB and 512GB.
Other than core specifications, you can get 5G support, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6.3 that also has support built-in for the Wi-Fi 7 standard. They have also included NFC for contactless payments. As for biometrics, there is a quick fingerprint sensor built into the screen and the option of face unlock is also given.
Camera and video
The camera setup in the Edge 40 Pro is quite strong. There are three cameras on the back, which include a main camera and ultrawide camera, both 50Mp, along with a 12Mp telephoto. The only camera that comes with optical image stabilization (OIS) is the main camera and it has a different sensor than the ultrawide lens, even though they have the same resolution.
The camera gives impressive results, with bright and sharp colors, both with the main camera and ultrawide, but the 12Mp has slightly lower quality.
The Verdict
With a good battery, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is an excellent option for those looking for performance and power.
