A look at the Gigabyte Aorus15 with the lid closed gives no hints that this is, in fact, a powerful gaming laptop. But, the 2023 model has packed some serious tech inside and it delivers quite the performance, especially considering its affordable price.
Design and features
The first thing you will notice about the Aorus 15 is that it does not have the usual gaming aesthetic. Sure, there is RGB lighting and a glowing light bar under the display, but you can minimize all of it via the Control Center software. The fact that it is a gaming laptop and can camouflage into its surroundings is a big benefit.
The laptop measures .82’’ high when it is closed, but it feels thicker because of its angular and blocky chassis. It is also not very lightweight, given that it weighs 4.96 lbs. Metal is used for the top display, but plastic makes up the base, but they feel quite sturdy. The display is 15.6inch and has a resolution of 2560×1440. Gigabyte has called it a ‘Thin Bezel’ frame that has relatively small sides, but the chin is huge.
There is a large camera array on the top bezel that can be used for signing in with Windows Hello, but the webcam does not have much to offer. Unless there is good lighting, it captures darker images. The Aorus15 comprises of Intel’s 13th-gen i7, the NvidiaRTX 4070 mobile GPU and 16GB DDR5 4800MHZ SODIMM memory. Fan vents have been added everywhere to support the powerful internals. The rear exhaust pushes all the heat.
The port positioning has been changed in this year’s design. Previously, the ports were on the sides, but they are now five ports on the back. This includes a DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1 port, DC power and Thunderbolt with power support.
Gaming performance
When it comes to gaming performance, you will find the Aorus 15 to be truly exceptional. It is a powerhouse in every regard, as it delivers a 60+fps in almost every game. The QHD display also looks downright beautiful, with vibrant colors and stark contrast. Gameplay is very smooth, thanks to the 165hzrefresh rate.
When it comes to day-to-day use, you do not need to worry about the fan noise, as it stays quiet. But, the fan can get very loud when you are gaming. But, the good thing is that the fans are great at keeping the laptop cool, so the keyboard does not get very hot.
Battery
Similar to other gaming laptops, the Aorus 15 uses up the battery at very high speeds. The laptop boasts a 90WHr battery, which can last for around five hours at least when you are using it for gaming. You can extend this up to seven hours as well, but it depends on what you are using it for.
The Verdict
If you want to buy the Aorus 15 as a gaming laptop, then it can deliver great performance at a low enough price of $1,849, but it is not a good option for daily use because the keyboard is mushy, the touchpad temperamental and the speakers are flimsy.
