There are not many phone brands that are able to make mid-range devices in the same way as Google. The Pixel A-series phones share a lot of DNA with the company’s flagship devices, so much so that they often feel like flagships. The same applies to Pixel 7a, as it gives mid-range phones from other manufacturers a run for their money.
Design and build
At first glance, you will see that the Google Pixel 7a is similar in appearance to the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, but there are some differences. It comes with a smaller screen, so it is more compact than the Pixel 7 and it is slightly thicker. It is the same size as last year’s 6a, but is 15g heavier, but lighter than the 7 at 193g. But, it is no longer a lightweight phone, even though it offers more durability. The back is plastic, while the display has Gorilla Glass, while the metal frame is tougher than before.
You can find the Pixel 7a available in a number of colors, which include Charcoal, Sea (blue), Snow (white) and there is also a Coral option.
Screen and speakers
The Google Pixel 7a’s display is 6.1inch OLED and has a chunky black bezel. What is the first for the A series is the refresh rate, which is the same 90Hz in the flagship Pixel 7. This means that you can enjoy a better gaming experience and the phone also feels faster in general. But, most mid-range phones come with 120Hz refresh rate, so it is a bit behind in this regard.
Nevertheless, the difference is not that noticeable and this works in favor of the Google Pixel 7a. As for the screen, it looks pretty good, thanks to some great viewing angles and punchy colors. The stereo speakers are also punchy and give a good volume.
Specs and performance
The Tensor G2 is the chip that powers the Pixel 7a, which is Google’s in-house chip, and it manages to deliver comparable performance to other mid-range rivals. The chip is powerful enough that the 7a will feel fast regardless of what you use it for, but it might struggle when you are playing some demanding games. The phone is available in just one specification; 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
In terms of networking, it has all the latest offerings, which include 5G, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, but two physical sim cards are not supported. Biometrics have gotten an upgrade, as you get a fingerprint sensor under the display and support for Face Unlock has also been added.
Camera
All-new sensors have been used in the 7a, which begin with a 64Mp main camera that has the largest sensor and highest resolution found in a Pixel A-series device. It gives really excellent photos, both in good light and in dim lighting as well. There is also a 13Mp ultrawide lens, which does struggle a bit in low light. There is a 2x zoom option in the camera app, but no telephoto lens. The front camera is a wide lens 13Mp for selfies and it also gives decent and crisp shots.
The Verdict
With a battery that can easily last a full day, the Pixel 7a is undoubtedly an affordable launch by Google, as it offers premium features at a reasonable price.
