The prologue of Honkai: Star Rail serves as an excellent hook, starting with a bang as a space station blows up. You find yourself in a world of rooms that have monitors on the walls, invaders that boast bladed arms and chrome doors locked with a code. It gives you enough reason to stick around, as the gameplay and story draws you in from the beginning.
The Honkai: Star Rail boasts interesting combat, charming characters and the words are carefully crafted, which means the game will keep you engaged for over 50 hours, making it one of the best RPGs.
The story
Honkai: Star Rail is another one of the games from HoYothat strongly emphasize on the story. You start the game as the amnesiac protagonist Trailblazer who uses the Astral Express for traveling from planet to planet. This is a spaceship similar to a train, or vice versa and the story is about the crew, the different planets that they travel to as well as their backstories.
There are a number of twists and turns in the story and sometimes the pacing is questionable, but it eventually results in an entertaining and engaging scenario that keeps you wanting more. The Underworld, which is poverty-stricken, and the political conflict in Belobog also make up the major story arc. The darker themes are quite well-balanced, as there are plenty of lighthearted jokes to enjoy. The characters shine in these areas and this makes the story more cohesive.
While the story is certainly not finished, Honkai: Star Rail does a great job at revealing interesting details about the characters and the intriguing mystery that kickstarts the game continues to intrigue you throughout.
The details
There are three major worlds in Honkai: Star Rail and each of them have a ton of details hiding in every corner. There are a number of interactions that will help you learn more, such as talking to NPCs and your travel buddies, or simply investigating a random object. The game also has a ton of documents and books that can help you dive deeper into the story, although it is not necessary.
As you move step by step, you are also rewarded and this ensures that beginners do not become overwhelmed. You will find that the leveling systems are different for your characters, account, world, abilities and two types of equipment.
The combat
The combat system in Honkai: Star Rail is actually turn-based and this gives you lots of room to consider your strategy. Therefore, it is considerably more satisfying when you are able to achieve victory. You will not get tired of experimenting with the composition of your team because every character is actually a combination of two different types.
Moreover, you also have the option of switching teammates, depending on what kind of enemies you will be facing next. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead and not just when the fight begins. Bear in mind that you will have to put some effort in this game for learning the various systems.
The Verdict
Whether it is storytelling, combat or the progression systems, Honkai: Star Trail is one of the top free-to-play games that have been introduced so far this year.
