Guerrilla Games had the option of introducing a Horizon expansion that would just be a tad more Forbidden West. In some ways, this is precisely what they have managed to accomplish with Burning Shores, since it has a good helping of everything that had made the game so great. It comes with a sci-fi story that comprises of some superb action.
You will once more solve puzzles, fight machines and climb tall structures, but Guerilla has also added some surprises. There are new machines for you to discover and they have added some fun ways of destroying them too. Therefore, Burning Shores is undoubtedly an excellent addition to the entire Horizon series.
The story
This particular game takes you to LA where you have to hunt down a lead that could prove to be useful against the threat that had been introduced at the end of the story in Forbidden West. Burning Shores is about four times the main map of the San Francisco area and boasts a lot of the visual identity of the area. While the water glistens and the sand sparkles, there is a lava flowing to indicate the increase danger.
You are plunged straight into that danger, which means you have to use techniques like slowdown time, whip yourself into the air and shift styles quickly, while the tectonic plates beneath you also shift. The introduction of new machine destruction is also interesting, like explosive crystals that lead to ruins collapsing on enemies that are nearby.
The combat
Since the new area has a clustered island nature, the design naturally creates contained large spaces that function as action-filled zones. It is in these areas that the combat encounters take place and they are some of the best ones that Guerilla has created in this series so far. You will come across an impressive variety of enemies that are combined with environments offering lots of opportunities.
The mechanical menagerie gets a boost with a couple of new threats, such as the acid-spewing, colossal Bilegut and a flying, buzzing Stingspawn similar to an ant. You also get an exciting new weapon to help you balance the odds and it is a powerful and highly enjoyable addition. Plus, some fresh abilities are also added, some of which are a lot of fun and also highly effective.
The surroundings
The DLC establishes Forbidden West as one of the best-looking games because the city’s depiction is undoubtedly stunning. There are some landmarks that still exist, including the Capital Records Building. But, these surroundings are not just visually impressive; they also provide some gameplay quirks that are quite interesting. For instance, the fizzing geysers are great for gliding high into the air, which can come in handy during combat.
Most of the fights are extremely thrilling, but the final encounter is a tad flat because the action comes off as clunky. The finale could feel a little disappointing because the overall adventure is a lot of fun.
The Verdict
The Burning Shores DLC is a worthy addition to the Horizon Forbidden West series and comes with fun new enemies and challenges that you can enjoy.
