The number of spinoffs of the League of Legends appear to be growing and another worthy addition is none other than The Mageseeker, which gives you magic. It is an RPG in which you take the role of Sylas The Unshackled who breaks out of prison for getting revenge against the ones who locked him since his childhood. While staying faithful to the League of Legends, the game uses exciting new ways to expand on it as well and you will definitely enjoy the journey.
The story
The Mageseeker has followed in the footsteps of other spinoffs of the League of Legends, such as Hextech Mayhem and Ruined King, as it has introduced a bunch of characters from their roster of 160 champions in a new way. Therefore, the character of Sylas has been shown in a bigger way than before as he leads a rebellion in the Kingdom of Demacia where they hunt mages.
There is some nuance in the story and some light parallels have also been drawn to real-world history where people have been targeted for being different. It will take you around 18 hours for finishing the game and also doing everything necessary for winning the platinum trophy on PlayStation 5. This means completing all the side quests as well as replaying a few missions for gathering collectibles you might have missed in your first attempt.
The characters
While you will always play the role of Sylas, there are some other favorite characters also introduced, which include Shyvana, Jarvan IV, Lux, Garen and Morgana. Digital Sun has also made an effort to make these characters even more powerful, as Lux has larger lasers than ever before and the Dark Bindings of Morgana last longer.
Other than these familiar faces, you will also see some original characters join Sylas and they take various roles in the story of rebellion, growth and vengeance. Some of them truly stand out, including Leilani who bonds with Sylas in the beginning and helps him during the rebellion.
The abilities
The beauty of the Mageseeker is that it starts with a bang, as Sylas escapes from prison with the help of the magic he borrows from a young Lux. While his first mission seems huge, there is a bit of a slowdown, as Sylas has to take the role of the leader of the rebellion. You will love the feeling of playing the character because you are able to dash around, pull yourself with the chains to your enemies, or the environment as well as borrow spells.
If you have played as Sylas in the League of Legends, you will have no trouble during combat, but even if you haven’t, the mechanics remain quite intuitive, so you will get the hang of it. The character of Sylas can sense the magic abilities of others and borrow them to use against enemies. There are a variety of spells you can use, but the ones you steal from enemies can only be used once. Combat remains pretty simple, but you have to be quick on your feet in later levels.
The Verdict
The Mageseeker is a wonderful edition to the list of League of Legends spinoff and it brings the characters to life in a wonderful way.
