Shadow plans to make its cloud storage service more economical for users. Earlier Shadow Drive storage service was available for €8.99 per month, but now the company lets you benefit from 2TB of storage by paying a monthly €4.99 fee. The free tier of the Shadow Drive storage remains the same, which allows users to get 20GB of storage without paying a fee.
Besides the online storage service, Shadow also offers a cloud computing service called Shadow PC. You can rent out a virtual Windows PC in any data center, allowing you to play demanding games on your desired device, including a smartphone, a laptop, or a connected television.
Shadow Drive is more like One Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, or Google Drive, where you can upload documents, presentations, and images and even download the same from a web browser. The storage service stores your content in a France-based data center, allowing you to access them anytime later.
Shadow Services
Shadow also provides mobile and desktop apps. It enables you automatically synchronize your files with your local gadgets. The Shadow Drive server automatically synchronizes the files and folders you drag and drop into its storage. It lets you see your things on other devices synchronized within the same Shadow Drive account.
The storage service takes inspiration from Nextcloud – an open-source storage app that can run on a user’s owned server. Shadow Drive can work well for managing the Nextcloud instance for its users. The solid foundation makes the online storage thoroughly effective with several advanced features, such as WebDAV support. The mobile-based storage service can automatically upload users’ most recent images in their photo library to make its automatic backup.
Apart from the new economical subscription rate, the tech company announced the availability of Shadow Drive on iOS platforms. While only macOS, Ubuntu, Windows, and Android users could access the online storage service, many called the iOS omission quite weird.
Shadow rolls out its storage service to users based in twelve European countries, including the UK. British users can subscribe to its premium subscription by paying a monthly fee of £4.99. The company plans to launch Shadow Drive and other services in North America sometime in the coming weeks.
The Debut of Shadow Drive
Shadow officially launched its services with two products. Besides cloud computing service that goes well with PC games, the company rolled out Next cloud-based cloud storage service called Shadow Drive.
Stéphane Héliot, the deputy CEO and co-founder of the company, says Octave Klaba – the founder of OVHCloud, took over Blade (the old name of Shadow) a year-and-half year ago with a goal in mind as he wanted to remove technological barriers and make cloud computing power available to everyone. Klaba aimed to save Shadow from bankruptcy.
As OVHCloud is in partnership with Shadow, every Shadow server shifted to the data centers of OVHCloud. Shadow revealed its roadmap for the future in May last year. The plan includes offering a cloud computing service, a cloud-based storage service, and a custom-made offering for business.
