Whether you wanted better dungeons, greater variety of enemies, or something totally unexpected from the sequel of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nintendo has ensured everyone can find what they wanted. While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom does not really revolutionize the prequel, but it does offer something better than just more of the same.
You will find that the sandbox is richer, bigger and even more ambitious than before and Nintendo has added some creative and unique systems for weapon crafting and vehicle building. Likewise, the Hyrule map has also been revolutionized, so it adds even more depth and makes it great for exploration.
The improvements
It is best for you to play The Legend of Zelda: breath of the Wild first to fully enjoy Tears of the Kingdom. It is a great game, so you should not really deprive yourself. You will find that the sequel is alot more expansive and smarter because even if the initial structure is familiar, there are a lot of new additions. You begin in an introductory area that has been masterfully crafted where you are given a set of powerful abilities and can learn the ropes.
Once that is done, you can do whatever it is you want. This includes even going straight to the campaign’s finale, as long as you know where to look. There are specific areas on the map where most of the big story movements, or cutscenestake place. You can learn about the history of Hyrule through these.
Apart from that, the start of Tears of the Kingdom introduces a bombastic event called ‘Upheaval’ that results in menacing chasms, thereby causing the appearance of Zonai in the sky. These are the ruins of an ancient civilization, which introduce strange anomalies and new structures.
The story
As usual, the story of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is about an evil jerk who needs to be stopped and Princess Zelda needs to be saved. But, you will find that the storytelling is a tad different from the typical Zelda plots and this makes it quite refreshing. Thanks to the new building system, you will find that exploration is undoubtedly delightful in this sequel as opposed to the previous ones.
You can navigate the world in whatever way you want, whether via flying machines, custom boats or even cars. There are a lot of things for you to see and do and you are given a blank map to do fill it in as you see fit. This ensures that the game does not become overwhelming for you at any point.
No repetition
Even though the map is same, you will not find it repetitive in any way. The story does not make it too complicated, as it has been a few years since Calamity Ganon was defeated and people have begun to rebuild. The main town is just outside of the castle in Hyrule Field and it evolves as you make progress.
Recognizing locations and characters and seeing how they have grown and changed is a lot of fun. You will also take unexpected paths and visit unfamiliar locations, thereby giving you a different perspective as well. This is because the Upheaval has altered some areas drastically, such as creating completely new terrains and causing unexpected anomalies in the weather.
The Verdict
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an excellent follow-up and even though it had a tough standard to beat, it is able to deliver.
