Since the launch of the S62 Pro, CAT-branded phones had hit pause, but that has now come to an end with the S75. Motorola has made the S75 due to which it is available as Defy 2 in a couple of regions. As per expectations, the phone has been designed to continue even after taking some knocks and it does exactly that. But, what makes it truly incredible is that the phone is capable of sending and receiving messages, even without service.
Design and build
The S75 design from Motorola has kept the phone relatively elegant and clean and it has steered clear of the excesses that are usually found in rugged phones. It has a slightly recessed screen, so there is a lip around the front face. This can save the screen from serious damage if it falls face first. The Corning Gorilla Glass Victushas been used to cover it, which makes it quite resilient.
There is an impact-resistant rubberized coating that covers the underside and sides, which also add to the durability. Weighing 268g, the phone is not excessively heavy and since it has a rubberized finish, it is easy to grip. The design of the S75 is more like a standard phone, as the power button is above the volume rocker and the middle of the back is where you will find the fingerprint reader. The phone does not have an audio jack, but there is a USB-C port.
Screen and speakers
The speakers are on the bottom of the S75, but the sound seems to come more from the screen than the speakers. There is not a lot of frequency range and this is mostly due to the use of the glass coating, but the sound comes out clear. As for the screen itself, it delivers a somewhat mixed experience. It is an IPS panel that boasts a resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels and has a ratio of 20:9.
The brightness can be adjusted, but using the phone outside can be challenging due to the reflective and naturally smooth surface of Gorilla Glass. The refresh rate of 120Hz is also of good quality.
Specs and performance
The MediaTekSoCis used for powering the S75, which is a variation of Dimensity900 platform called the 930. The chipset is powerful and it comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. But, you will not find any GPU features, but it functions quite well and can handle day-to-day tasks without any hassle.
Cameras
The S75 has a 50Mp main camera that uses a sensor from Samsung, which may not be the leading one in the market, but it manages to deliver high quality images. The rear of the phone also has an 8Mp camera that has a low-resolution, but is great for super-wide shots. The front camera is 8Mp and that is a bit of a disappointment. As for video, it only offers 1080p and this seems limited, as most phones are doing 4K these days.
The Verdict
There is no doubt that S75 is a very robust phone and its performance is good enough to offer a decent user experience. Its specifications are not exactly amazing, but it is good enough for most users unless they need it for gaming or something graphically intensive.
