Even though Diablo 4 has not reinvented ARPGs, or made any other changes in the genre that it helped in pioneering, there is no denying that the game is downright awesome. The improvements, tweaks and borrowed ideas that have been introduced in this installment help make it one of the best Diablo games you have played. The graphics are stellar, the combat options are extensive and fine-tuned and the live-service foundation remains as strong as ever.
The innovations
The demon-centric series is drawing closer to its 30th birthday and Diablo 4 has been able to successfully modernize Hell enough to help it in keeping up with its peers. You will be on your way to a number of dungeon crawls in order to optimize your DPS, fine-tune your abilities and improve your survivability. You will be back to the familiar tasks of getting rid of groups of enemies, taking down bosses, completing objectives and doing sidequestsfor learning more about the characters and the lore.
If you expected Diablo 4 to come with a ton of innovations in the world of ARPG, then you are in for disappointment. Instead of trying to revolutionize the genre, Blizzard has opted to play it safe and has made unsurprising and smart changes to the formula. They have come up with diverse playstyles and customizable skills for its iconic characters. There may not be any game-changing innovations, but the lack of experimentation has worked in its favor because the game is quite well-designed.
The quest
As compared to its predecessor that was introduced 11 years ago, Diablo 4 is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. The quest is about finding the daughter of one of the Prime Evils of Hell, Lilith. This is because she has unleashed her anger upon Sanctuary. There are no cheesy dialogues anymore, or the WWE-like voice performances for that matter. Instead, you will find that the queen of succubihas some really strong motivations, which makes her one of the most complex villains you will ever come across.
This is the setup you will come across in the first act, but the next four will send you on related errands that are just a filler. This creates a disjointed, albeit interesting story. But, there is no denying that whenever Lilith comes on screen, it is absolutely riveting. However, she remains mostly hidden behind the curtain for the final act.
The perks
It is certainly helpful that the sounds and looks you will see in Diablo 4 are downright fantastic, no matter where the story is going. The CGI cut-scenes are rare, but they are undoubtedly breathtaking. Likewise, the corrupted and detailed environments you see in dungeons make Sanctuary rather gorgeous. The OST of Diablo 4 is truly spectacular due to which the game sounds better than it looks, which is truly an accomplishment. The ending of the story is such that it opens up a ton of possibilities for the future as well.
The Verdict
Diablo 4 proves to be an outstanding sequel that comes with an almost perfect endgame and the design makes it very difficult to put down.
