Codemasters is back again with another Formula 1 game and it is a testament to the amazing strength of their open-wheel motorsport magic that it is a pleasure to get back to racing every year. The same applies to F1 23, which handles the new-era cars in an improved way and also brings the next chapter in the Braking Point story mode that had been rolled out in F1 2021. The game also boasts a new progression system, which is based on rewards, and comes with goals for days, weeks and seasons. You will stay busy for the most part, while you have fun.
Improved driveability
Some major regulation changes had been made last season, which had resulted in the introduction of brand-new F1 cars. They were undoubtedly some of the best-looking ones because of their bigger tires and wheels, but they were also the heaviest. Managing the bigger size made things a bit tricky in F1 2022 and players had to spend some time in learning how to handle them.
The good news is that there has been a dramatic improvement in driveabilty in F1 23. The new-era cars are still on the bulky side, but they feel more stable and cooperative. Moreover, even if you are playing without a wheel, the game pad controls are easy to use because of their improved intuitiveness. The cars feel dangerous and lively even when you are only using a controller.
Braking Point 2
The story that Codemasters had initiated two years ago is continued in this year’s F1 23 and it comprises of 17 chapters. It is certainly an interesting one that will keep you hooked to the very end. A fictional eleventh team by the name of Konnersportis introduced and this has given more substance to the story. Conflict and emotion are both running high in this story and even though the conclusion comes off as predictable, it does not take away its charm.
The original story had been focused on Casper Akkerman and Aiden Jackson, but Braking Point 2 does not just focus on a driving pair. Instead, it shines the light on the entire team, which include the drivers as well as the team principal. Jackson has returned as the driver, along with Devon Butler, his long-time nemesis. The latter’s father is also in the picture, as he is the CEO of the main sponsor of Konnersport.
The scenarios
Like in the original story, there are different scenarios that make up Braking Point 2, with Mayer, Jackson and Devon Butler having to achieve various challenges. Some of the events are mid-race scenarios, while others comprise of full races. You can get bonus objectives if you overachieve and it helps boost your rank.
In Braking Point 2, Jackson’s story is not the focus and it is Devon who is the most layered and interesting character. The cutscenes have improved significantly and the interview sequences are also quite cleverly done. The addition of a standalone mode by the name of F1 World is also new and it focuses on traditional championship seasons.
The Verdict
As opposed to last year’s F1 22, F1 23 turns out to be a lot more appealing, as it introduces a new chapter in the Braking Point story and comes with 26 tracks to keep you occupied.
