The third foldable phone from Huawei is Mate X3 and this is another book-style device that comes with a lighter and slimmer design than the previous one. There is no support for Google services, which is a downside because the company has done an outstanding job where hardware is concerned.
Design and build
When it comes to builds, Huawei does a great job and the same applies here. The phone feels very practical and feels downright incredible. In fact, at 11.08mm when folded, the Huawei Mate X3 is surprising slim and is 5.3mm when unfolded. This is a great accomplishment for a device that has two displays.
The phone weighs 239g, which is also very impressive. It means that the Mate X3 is one of the lightest and slimmest book-style foldable devices that exist. The rear camera bump is large and circular and it makes a statement. The phone is available in a black glass finish, as well as a dark green vegan leather finish.
The book-style folding design means that there is one display on the outside and then another on the inside when you open it up, but it will have a fold in the middle. It has slots for two SIMs and a nano-memory card for more storage. Face recognition is available and a mounted fingerprint sensor can also be found.
Screen and speakers
The Mate X3 has two screens and they are equally outstanding. The external display is 6.4inch in size with a 20.9:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 1080 x 2504. It is slimmer than a regular phone, but apps and webpages will function normally. As for the internal screen, it is 7.85inch with a 2224 x 2496 resolution. Both displays have a 120Hz refresh rate and are OLED panels.
They are colorful and bright and the internal display has a crease, but it is not that prominent. It also feels sturdy and solid. The outer edge has a thick bezel, but it is expected with a phone of this kind. Huawei has used its Kunlun reinforced glass for protecting the outer display. Both the internal and outer screen have a selfie camera.
Not all apps function properly on the internal display like Instagram images are cut off slightly. As for the stereo speakers, they produce punchy and loud sound. The audio is suitable for video streaming and podcasts, but not as good for music.
Specs and performance
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor powers the Mate X3 and boasts 12GB RAM as well as storage of 512GB. While it is not the latest chip from Qualcomm, it still makes the phone a powerful one. You can use it for multitasking, strenuous apps and even gaming. In fact, it performs better than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4. Thus, there is no need for you to worry about performance where the Mate X3 is concerned.
The Verdict
When it comes to hardware, the Huawei Mate X3 has managed to beat all the other book-style foldables that are currently available in the market.
