When you are looking for a premium watch, you can immediately turn to brands like Apple and Samsung and even Google makes some worthwhile alternatives. But, if you are looking for reasonable options, you can check out the offerings of Mobvoi. The Chinese firm offers TicWatch branded watches in both North America and Europe and its most polished and refined effort can be found in the form of TicWatch Pro 5.
Design and build
If you are looking for a subtle design, you should steer clear of the TicWatch Pro 5. The smartwatch is rugged and is designed to last, which you will notice right away. The imposing and bulky design is not for everyone, but the watch feels durable and tough. The good news is that premium aesthetics have not been sacrificed to get there.
The Pro 5 is also not too thick, as it only measures 12.2mm and it is versatile enough that you can use it for formal events and for working out. You can swap the silicone band for any 24mm strap. You will only find a 48mm case, so it is not for people with smaller wrists. A combination of glass, nylon and aluminum does not sound amazing, but it meets the MIL-STD-810H standards, which proves its strength.
The bezels are slightly raised to keep the screen protected and 5ATM water resistance also adds to the durability. The Pro 5 is also quite lightweight at 44.3g, even though it is made mostly of metal. The right side has two physical contacts and the rotating crown is helpful for scrolling.
Display and audio
The TicWatch Pro 5 has a 1.43inch display, which is a big advantage. It comes with a resolution of 466×466 and the OLED screen has made it one of the best displays on a smartwatch. The colors are vibrant and details are excellent. The size of the screen also makes navigation easy and the touchscreen is also responsive, so you will have no trouble in swiping and tapping. Since the display is flat instead of curved, it actually makes things easier.
Audio is not that important and the Pro 5’s loudspeaker is good enough for calls. The voice is clear and loud, so you will not have any complaints and this applies to the single mic too.
Software and features
Wear OS 3.5 powers the TicWatch Pro 5, which is Google’s latest software that will soon be replaced with Wear OS 4. The watch is intuitive and slick and it is easy to get used to, even if you have not used it before. Some apps have been pre-installed by Mobvoiand others you can download from the Play Store.
You have to connect the watch to the MobvoiHealth Companion app on your smartphone for it to start tracking your fitness. The app has a lot of functionality, but it is a little difficult to understand. You can make changes to the watch face easily and the main features can be accessed via the watch directly. Navigation is also an excellent feature and NFC payments are also supported.
The Verdict
The TicWatch Pro 5 is the best smartwatch that Mobvoi has come up with so far and anyone with an Android device should consider it.
