If you are a 90s Metalhead fan, then the Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the ultimate dream come true for you. The game is the perfect combination of a first-person shooter that comes with a retro touch and the sci-fi universe. Its character designs are quite rich and the sense of story, aesthetics and level design is also extremely appealing.
The story
You play the character of a Space Marine Sternguardwho is on loan to the mean and scary Imperial Inquisition. You do not speak much, but are quite accomplished at what you do. Essentially, your job is to kill whatever stands in the way of your objective. There is not much of a story in this game, so you do not need to think a lot. But, there is plenty of gunning and running.
During the three chapters and various levels, you will be busy purging, cleansing and killing every daemon and heretic that you will come across in the world of Graia. A little Servo-Skull guides you and is actually delightful, as it offers a commentary about the world around you.
The combat and weapons
The campaign will take you somewhere between 8 to 10 hours. It starts slow, but picks up halfway through and comes to an end in a remarkable way where you discover some fun and unexpected gems. Similar to a lot of retro first-person shooter games, Boltgunwill appeal to those who enjoy the hardest difficulties.
You will have to master the combat and the movement in order to understand the different levels and the types of weapons. Every weapon in Boltgun has a special job to fulfill. You will find eight weapons available, along with the chainswordthat can be used for making your enemies explode. Some of the other weapons you will have include the Vengeance Launcher, which was also seen in the Space Marine.
There is also the Heavy Bolter, which does not need a reload. The long-range plasma gun is also fun to use, as is the volkitecaliverthat has a precision beam. Each weapon comes with a Strength stat and there is also a Toughness stat for enemies. This allows you to choose the right weapon to deal with an enemy.
The enemies
The good thing about Boltgun is that there are a lot of baddies in the game for you to deal with. You will have large hordes thrown at you and it often locks you in a combat arena. You are required to make use of your superhuman charges, sprints, jumps as well as immunity for overcome the overwhelming odds.
The enemies are generally good, as they are quite well-balanced and they also demand that you switch tactics when you deal with them. Some of them come with really unique powers and this makes things interesting. But, the enemy types end when you reach halfway and they will be the same ones for the rest of the game.
The Verdict
Boltgunis heavy on the action, even if it is light on the story, but the game certainly impresses and is quite enjoyable.
