One of the best sellers from Acer is its Aspire 5 laptop and the 2023 brings forth the 13th-gen processors from Intel with a 15.5-inch Full HD display.
Design, build and connections
The Aspire 5 does not really catch the eye with its looks because it is all about functionality. Its plastic exterior is dark and the display bezels are large, which give it an old-fashioned look. But, there is one ergonomic advantage; when you open the screen further, the keyboard moves up slightly and this makes typing more comfortable.
There are plenty of ports to be found on the Aspire 5, which include a full-size HDMI connection, a USB Type-C and two USB Type-A ports. There is no Ethernet option available, but the latest Wi-Fi 6E standard is supported.
Display, keyboard and trackpad
Aspire 5 comes with a 15.6-inch display, which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The aspect ratio is the classic 16:9. Rather than a glossy coating, the display has a matte one, which minimizes interference from reflections. The color reproduction is where the screen proves to be lacking, which does not matter when you are doing office work, but becomes apparent when you are doing video editing or graphical work.
The keyboard takes up the entire width of the base, due to which there is a number pad on the right. The main keyboard comes with larger keys, but those of the number pad are quite small. You can enjoy typing quietly and the keys do not feel spongy. You need a lot of force for the mouse click on the touchpad. But, since it has a non-slip surface, you can position the mouse pointer precisely.
Performance and battery life
The processor that Acer is relying on is the 10-core Core i7-1355U from Intel, but it only has two cores that focus on performance. This means that it is a lot less powerful than other chips. But, you will only notice the lacking performance when the Aspire 5 is used for tasks like video or photo editing, or graphic design.
Even then, the decline in performance is not that major. Even though performance and power consumption is law, the fan is quite loud in Aspire 5. However, the device does not really get too hot. It is the battery where the U-series chip offers the real advantage. Even though it has a small cell of about 53Wh, the laptop can last for about 12 hours. In addition, it takes only an hour for you to charge the laptop to about 84% after you have run out of battery, which is quite impressive.
The Verdict
There is no doubt that the Acer Aspire 5 is an all-rounder when it comes to a laptop. It has a solid design, a good battery life and can also provide good performance, which means it covers the requirements of most users. But, while it can be used for various tasks, it does not stand out in any particular category.
