There is a bit of confusion surrounding this laptop from Asus because it is advertised as Asus Vivobook 16X OLED on the company’s website. But, this does not mean that you are getting an OLED screen. This is due to the fact that it has multiple configurations, with only two being OLED and the rest being an IPS LCD panel.
Display and audio
Even though the Vivobook16X does not have an OLED display, it still remains affordable, powerful and well-built. Considering the price point, the screen is actually a good one. The default mode has good color accuracy and you can get punchy colors if you switch to Vivid mode. The contrast is as you would expect from an IPS display, but the 120Hz refresh rate is definitely a plus.
The screen also has a matte surface and it also comes with anti-glare protection, so you can use it outside. The speakers are also very well-balanced and you will not face any issues when you play voice-based content. The microphones are also decent and the 720p webcam is acceptable, so there will not be any problems with video calling.
Specs, performance and ports
The hardware of the Vivobook 16X is what you will see in a basic gaming laptop, as it comes with the NvidiaGeForce RTX graphics card and a powerful Intel H-type processor. But, this does not mean that you can use it for gaming, as it is meant to be a productivity laptop. The GPU has been added to improve performance for doing demanding tasks like video editing. You will not find any other gaming-related features.
But, it should be noted that the graphics and processor used in the device are certainly not the latest, not even at the time of its release. Therefore, you have to put up with some compromises if you are gaming. Nonetheless, the RTX 3050 still does a great job when you are doing other tasks. Likewise, the Core i7-12650H chip has about six cores focusing on efficiency, while the remaining 4 are good for multitasking.
The laptop comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, but there is a slot available for SD card if you want more. You can find two Type-A ports and one Type-C. There is no USB-C charging supported, as the laptop comes with the standard round plug.
Keyboard, trackpad and battery life
The design of the keyboard is well thought-out, as it has large buttons and clear backlighting, even though things do get a bit crowded with the separate number pad. The travel is not really great, but it will not be a major problem unless you spend a lot of time typing. The matte glass trackpadis very comfortable to use and easy to control and the top-right corner also has a fingerprint sensor for easy unlocking.
But, battery life of the Vivobook 16X is nothing special because of the gaming-level graphics, the powerful performance and the 120Hz display.
The Verdict
The Vivobook 16X can deliver a lot for your money, as it offers an impressive display, high-end performance and effective cooling, but battery life is definitely weak.
