It was in 2015 that true wireless earbuds had been introduced for the first time and since then, most of them boast the same design. While some brands have deviated a bit from the standard, none have gone as far as the JBL Tour Pro 2. Even though the buds are quite similar, the case is where they are different, as it comes with its own built-in display.
Design and build
The case display is an LCD touchscreen that measures 1.4-inch and gives you enough room for swiping across. The user-interface is simple, but no resolution has been mentioned. Nonetheless, you can view it comfortably in various lighting conditions. You can unlock the screen by swiping to the right and also customize the lockscreen wallpaper.
There is a JBL Headphones app, which is available for both iOS and Androidand can be used for customization. You can also choose the optional pages to be shown on the display, which include VoiceAware, Spatial Sound, SilentNow, Auto Play & Pause, Ambient Sound Control and Equalizer. You will find plenty of functionality, such as a bud finding feature, core volume and playback controls, flashlight and timers.
In fact, the case can also be used for displaying notifications and answering calls. The case is obviously bulkier and bigger for accommodating the screen. It weighs 73g and measures 10 x 16 x 4.6cm, but remains portable. It is all plastic, with the exception of the glass screen. But, it looks premium thanks to the glossy finish. The Tour Pro 2 is available in black and a beige color that has been named ‘Champagne’.
The bottom is where the USB-C charging port can be found. The buds have a short stem design and they look good due to the exposed metal, but the rest is all plastic. Silicone tips are included in the box in three sizes.
Sound quality
The JBL Tour Pro 2 deliver a great sound that has depth and warmth due to the dual 10mm drivers that have been used. The sound is plenty detailed and you can even identify all instruments in a song and the bass is also satisfying. You can also personalize the sound via the JBL Headphones app. As for in-depth control, the case comes with an equalizer that you can tweak.
The only downside is the absence of support for high-res codecs. Nevertheless, they are able to deliver a vibrant and rich sound for the most part.
Features
JBL has done a good job of implementing Active noise cancelling (ANC), which means it is able to block external noise quite well for the most part.If you turn it off, you will hear a lot of sound, especially in loud environments. You can adjust the level of ANC through the app by doing an ear canal test. You will find two more listening modes.
First is the ‘Ambient Aware’ mode that helps you decide how much sound to let in. The second is ‘Talk Thru’ that can actually amplify voices. ‘Spatial Sound’ is also an important feature, where it feels that you can hear the audio from all directions. Voice assistant support is also included for Alexa, Siri on iOS and Google Assistant on Android.
The Verdict
As great as the JBL Tour Pro 2 are, the top reason to buy these wireless earbuds is the case display.
