It was not that long ago that the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 had come out as the fastest gaming laptop, but MSI does not want to be left behind and it has proven it with the Titan G77 HX 13V. While it shares the same processor as Scar 16, its graphics are more capable and it comes with more RAM, a bigger screen, a larger SSD and all combined in a heavier and bigger chassis.
Design and build
The Titan G77 looks like a beast with its pitch-black exterior until you switch it on and then you see a rainbow of colors. The keyboard has been made by SteelSeries and it comes with Cherry MX keys that have a mechanical switch. The keyboard is relatively thin, but it gives a distinctive typing experience. The laptop weighs 3.3kgs and is about 2.3cm thick and is a laptop you definitely do not want to mess with.
Display, webcam and ports
The 17-inch display boasts some of the best-possible specs, which include a 4K Mini-LED and a refresh rate of 144Hz. The weight and thickness of the device goes up due to the Mini-LED, but it is certainly worth it. While it is usually considered a problem in gaming, but MSI has done a decent job with it. You can choose from color profiles according to your activities, like gaming, office work and movies and this can help with adjustments.
You can enjoy wireless internet with Wi-Fi 6E support, or get a faster wired connection with the 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port. Other ports include a Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, three USB-A and two Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports. The webcam is nothing special, which is surprising. But, it comes with an IR sensor that you can use for Windows Hello face unlock. Below the keyboard, you will also find a fingerprint reader.
Specs and performance
MSI has not skimped when it comes to specifications, as they have used the Intel Core i9-13980HX, which is the most powerful processor in the market for laptops currently. It uses the most capable mobile graphics card currently available from Nvidia, the GeForce RTX 4090 with memory of 16GB. There is a 4TB SSD and 64GB of DDR5 RAM.
The laptop certainly sets some new performance records. It has the fastest SSD array and it can render excellent performance even in the long run. It also boasts efficient cooling, even if it is loud. As far as the graphics performance is concerned, it is undoubtedly special. Even games that are very demanding and heavy on the graphics, you can get a smooth result.
Speakers and battery
Next to the keyboard and within the shell, there are four speakers to be found that are 2W each and they sound nice, detailed and clean. As far as battery is concerned, you cannot expect a lot from such laptops and the same applies here. It lasts for about an hour and a half when you are playing games, but for five hours when you use it for Word and surfing the web.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a laptop that can give you the best gaming performance, the MSI Titan GT77 is a great bet, but you will have to break the bank to get it.
