With a reputation of making impressive, budget phones, Oppo has come up with another one in the form of A78. Nonetheless, this phone has some tough competition to deal with because there are a number of budget devices in the same range.
Design and build
The design of the Oppo A78 5G is undoubtedly decent, but it does not have the same heft found in both mid-range and high-end Android devices. The phone feels comfortable and light, as it weighs 188g, but is not very durable. There is a small teardrop notch on top and it does have bezels around the side, but you will stop noticing them soon enough. While Oppo claims to have used ‘toughened glass’ for the screen, it is not Gorilla Glass used on more expensive devices.
The power button on the right has a fingerprint sensor, which is responsive, but using it is a bit difficult for left-handers. There is also a face unlock mode that can be setup quickly and works smoothly. The A78 5G is available in three colors, which are blue, purple and black. Thephone also has a headphone jack, but it is at the bottom. Space is also available for a microSD card.
Screen and speakers
There is a 6.56-inch LCD screen and it has a resolution of 1612×720, while the refresh rate is 90Hz. The screen remains clear and bright, no matter what the environment. You can scroll through apps smoothly and you will have no trouble in viewing photos or anything else.
The A78 has two speakers, one on top and the other at the bottom and both of them have an impressive sound. In fact, there is also an ‘Ultra Volume Mode’ that can actually add to the external volume.
Specs and performance
There are two varieties that you will find in the A78, with one edition boasting 4GB and the other having 8GB of RAM, while storage is 128GB for both. As for the inside, the phone is powered by the MediaTek6833 processor as well as a Mali-G57 MC2. This makes the device a good one for mid-range gaming. You can switch between apps quickly, but there are occasional glitches and are very rare. The device has 5G support, as obvious from the name, which is certainly a bonus given that it is a budget phone.
Cameras
You will find two lenses on the rear, one of which is a 50Mp main camera, while the other is a 2Mp black and white camera to provide depth. The front selfie camera is 8Mp. Overall, the cameras on the A78 do the job, but there is definitely room for some improvement. As for zoom, it can go as high as 5x and is adequate.
There are also some extra modes available that can help you take better photos, such as the Extra HD mode and the AI mode.
The Verdict
Considering the price tag, the A78 is an excellent device because it gives you a two-day battery, decent performance for gaming and scrolling, 5G connectivity and an adequate camera.
