Only a few months after launching the 8 Pro, RedMagic is back with the 8S Pro, which is also a gaming phone. There have been several tweaks in the phone and performance has gotten a boost, but there could still be more improvement.
Design and build
The 8S pro is almost exactly the same as its predecessor, as they have almost identical dimensions. The RedMagic8S Pro measures 164 x 76.4 x 9.5mm, which means there is just a minor difference in thickness about 0.6mm. The phone is hefty at 228g, so you are unlikely to forget that you are carrying it.
The new model also comes with the same 6.8inch display that uses Gorilla Glass 5. It also has a metal chassis and gives you the premium feel that its predecessor did. You will not find any curved or soft edges on the device, as the 8S Pro is actually a sharp device and looks very serious. The sides have the on/off button, the volume up and down buttons and the red switch used for enabling Game Space.
When it comes to charging, you will find USB-C available and there is a 65W charger given in the box. The back has the triple camera system and there are lights under some areas that light up when you get a message. The Aurora finish comes with a glass back, while other color schemes do not. These include Midnight and Platinum.
Screen and speakers
The display of the 8S Pro is same as the 8 Pro, which means that the AMOLED panel comes with a resolution of 2480 x 1116. Since it is a gaming phone, it comes with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The phone can choose the refresh rate, depending on the activities you are engaging in, so it can deliver a decent performance and ensure energy efficiency. There is no pin-hole or notch for the front camera, as RedMagic has opted for an under-display one. You can also find an under-display fingerprint sensor.
Stereo speakers have been used in the 8S Pro and they produce plenty of sound. They are placed on both ends of the device. The 3.5mm audio jack can be used when you want better sound.
Specs and performance
Since it is a gaming phone, the 8S Pro comes with impressive processing power. There is a 3.36GHz Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and it comes with a Red Core 2 gaming processor. The latter helps with RBG lighting, haptic responses and audio responses. Therefore, it is not surprising that the phone deals with all the action quite well. It does not slow down or lag in any way.
RedMagic has opted to upgrade the cooling system for this device, as they have opted for theICE 12.0 system. They have opted to focus more on the thermals, which shows because the 8S Pro remains cool even when the graphical demands are intense.
The Verdict
With the massive battery, the generous RAM, fast storage and overclocked chip, the 8S Pro offers excellent performance.
