The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 may not have gotten a lot of attention at the company’s Unpacked event, but it is one of the devices that has the most mainstream appeal. The watch is relatively affordable and comes with premium features. Since it runs the Google WearOS, it has become the default smartwatch of Android users.
Design and build
The Galaxy Watch 5 introduced last year had a minimalist and slick design that had proved to be a winner. Therefore, the company decided to not make any changes to it with the Galaxy Watch 6. It is a premium blend of glass and stainless steel, yet it still manages to remain lightweight. The 40mm and 44mm models weigh 28.7g and 33.3g, respectively. It is slimmer than its predecessor at 9mm, so it does not feel bulky or big.
The silicone strap is also very comfortable and matches the watch’s housing. It does not lose color, or accumulate dust. While the Galaxy Watch 6 is not a rugged smartwatch, it still offers durability. The steel casing is robust and feels tough. It has two buttons on the side; a ‘Back’ and ‘Home’ button, both of which you can remap in Settings.
Display and audio
Samsung has managed to increase the display size on the Galaxy Watch 6 without changing the overall casing size. There is a 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch screen on the 40mm and 44mm watch, respectively, as the bezels have been slimmed down. They also offer a higher resolution of 432 x 432 and 480 x 480. This means that it has one of the best displays to be found on smartwatches.
As Samsung has stuck to OLED, you can get vibrant and rich colors, along with deep blacks. You can see plenty of detail. The touch-sensitive edge of the display serves as a digital version of the rotating physical bezel. It has a good response time and the haptic feedback is also impressive. The audio on the Galaxy Watch 6 actually turns out to be quite impressive, even though it is not usually a priority on these devices. You can enjoy clear sound from the built-in speaker.
Software and features
Running WearOS 4, which is the latest software from Google at the time of the launch of the Galaxy Watch 6, it comes with some tweaks from Samsung. You can use it with any Android device, but it works best with Samsung. Everything has been assigned a clear space, so you will not have to go through the menus to find the settings and apps you need.
There are also third-party apps that you can find in the Google Play Store version. The biggest addition is WhatsApp and other options include SoundCloud, Todoist, Calm and Spotify. You can also get phone notifications on your watch. Google Maps is also pre-installed. As far as fitness is concerned, you can find everything in Samsung Health. The watch excels in terms of fitness tracking, as it offers support for over 90 workouts.
The Verdict
While the Galaxy Watch 6 is certainly an improvement over its predecessor, it still needs to boost its battery life to offer real value for money.
