Folding phones can be quite confusing, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is undoubtedly great. You can fold the regular smartphone-size phone into a smaller square shape that you can easily put in your pocket. The outer screen of the device is definitely larger than the past versions of the phone, but it is still smaller than a regular screen, which means running apps can be a bit difficult.
Design and build
Since it shuts like the flip phones that used to be around in the 2000s, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is smaller to store in a bag or pocket, or hold in your hand. In fact, it is the polar opposite of the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is a regular phone size, but opens up into a larger screen. The hinge of the Z Flip 5 has been redesigned, which allows it to shut flat so there is no gap left, as opposed to the previous devices.
Glass and aluminum has been used to make the outside of the phone, so the texture is slippery. The top and front half of the back of the phone is covered by the outer display, while the rest comprises of a volume rocker, a USB-C port, dual main cameras and a fingerprint sensor mounted on the side. It also has excellent haptics.
Screen and speakers
There is a 6.7-inch OLED folding screen with 120Hz refresh rate and aspect ratio of 22:9 when you unfold the phone. There is a big crease in the middle. Glass composite and plastic has been used for the fold, which might not feel premium, but works quite well. If you turn it sideways, you do get a wide screen.
The outer screen of the Z Flip 5 has gotten a big upgrade. The display is 3.4-inch with a 60Hz refresh rate and can show a lot more information than on previous devices. Essentially, you can open notifications without opening the phone, interact with them ad use apps like alarms, weather and calendar. You can also open other apps like WhatsApp, YouTube and Google Maps and it even opens up a tiny keyboard for you to type messages.
While it does look interesting and cool, it is a contradiction because when you fold the phone, the whole point is to stop using it. The bottom of the phone and the earpiece have dual stereo speakers that have decent volume and even if you crank it up, there is no distortion.
Specs and performance
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a special overclocked version used in other Samsung devices and the same is used for the Z Flip 5. Therefore, it is not surprising that the phone runs smoothly. It comes with 8GB of RAM, which remains the same, whether you get storage of 256GB or 512GB. Connectivity options include NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, 4G and 5G and Wi-Fi 6E.
The Verdict
The cameras and battery life of the Z Flip 5 are perfectly acceptable, which makes it a good device for anyone who is looking for a modern folding flip phone.
