The Z Fold 5 is Samsung’s fifth phone that folds in book-style, so things are now looking familiar. It looks and feels a lot like its predecessor, but it proves to be the best book-style folding phone you can buy, even though there is a lot of competition from other companies. This is primarily due to Samsung’s software, which is undoubtedly the best in the market due to useful flexibility, app formatting as well as its S-pen.
Design and build
The Z Fold 4 introduced last year had barely changed from the Z Fold 3, but the Z Fold 5 comes with some changes. In terms of design, the latest model shuts flat completely, which means less dust will be collected in the crease. It weighs 253g, which makes it close to a paperweight, but it is the thinnest Fold phone at 13.4mm when closed.
The phone is available in black, icy blue, cream and a blue and grey. The hinge of the Z Fold 5 is also great, as it can stay open at any angle. This makes the phone feel premium. As it has a tall and thin design, you can use it comfortably. A fingerprint sensor is mounted on the right side, which makes unlocking the phone easy.
It also has the best haptics, as they are strong enough to feel when kept in the pocket or bag and clipped and punchy with the keyboard. Instead of a cheap buzzing sound, you can get quality.
Screen and speakers
The inner folding display is the highlight of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It does have a notable crease in the center, but is still a good AMOLED panel of 7.6-inch. Using LTPO tech, the screen has a resolution of 2176 x 1812 that has a dynamic refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz. The apps look bright and bold and the colors are also great. It has an aspect ratio of 21.6:18, which makes the inner-screen great for looking at two apps side by side, or full-screen apps.
When the phone is closed, the front has an AMOLED screen of 6.2-inch and its refresh rate is between 48 and 120Hz. It comes with a 23.1:9 aspect ratio. The top and bottom have stereo speakers on the left half when you unfold the device. They are surprisingly detailed and deliver a full sound.
Specs and performance
The Z Fold 5 uses the same processor as that of the Galaxy S23 Ultra and other phones in the series. It is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and is able to deliver flawless performance. All models come with 12GB of RAM and you can also get 1TB of storage. When it comes to connectivity, the phone comes with Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E, LTE and 5G. A dual nano-SIM slot is also given, so you can use an eSIM as well.
The Verdict
The starting price of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is $1,799.99, which is quite expensive. The cameras are also not in accordance with the price tag, but if you want a good book-style phone that does much better than the competition, then it is the top choice available.
