Previously known as AfterShokz, Shokz is known for producing headphones with a bone-conductor style, which can be stay secure even during exercise. The company has eliminated the headband for its latest device and created a pair of true wireless earphones that have a more subtle design as they hook over your ears. The OpenFit are the most premium earphones that Shokz has introduced.
Design and build
There is no doubt that OpenFit are the best-looking earphones that the fitness wearable brand has introduced so far. They are available in two colors; beige and the standard black. The speaker will be directly in front of your ear canal when you fit the hook around the top of your ear. They are different from in-earbuds because your ears will be free to stay aware of your surroundings, but this means audio quality will be a bit compromised.
They are quite easy to wear once you adjust to the hook. The earphone is very lightweight, as each weighs about 8.3g. They have a matt finish and are made from silicone. OpenFit are also quite durable and they stay secure during exercise, no matter how vigorous the exercise. They come with a square case, which is larger than the usual pill-style, but it still fits into your pocket easily.
There is a single light on the front of the case that alerts you about battery status, while the rear has a USB-C slot for charging. The box includes a cable, but no brick.
Smart features
It is immensely easy to pair OpenFit with your computer or phone. You have to open the case lid and turn on the pairing mode by pressing on the earphone. They can be connected as regular Bluetooth earphones, but if you are looking for customization in terms of touch and audio controls, then you have to download the Shokz app, on both Android and iOS devices.
The app can be used for checking the battery life of earphones and the case, which is shown in 10% increments. You can choose from five audio presets, which are Standard, Customize, Vocal, Treble Boost and Bass Boost. The app also allows you to tweak touch controls and there are two movements that can be used, which include long press and double tap. They are set to control volume and playback by default, but the gestures can also be used for activating the voice assistant or skipping tracks.
Sound quality
Shokz OpenFit have better-than-expected audio for an open-ear device, but it is not perfect in any way. There is a custom 18 x11mm driver, which is a bit bigger than what you will find on in-ear headphones. But, the frequency range is between 50Hz and 16KHz, which is a bit disappointing. You can hear the tracks in detail, even when you keep your ears open to the surroundings.
When you are in public, it is best to turn up the audio by 80%. You will not disturb those around you, even when you turn it up to full. Music is also very clear and the audio is generally balanced and simple. You can also answer calls, as dual mics have been included with AI noise cancelling.
The Verdict
The Shokz OpenFit offer an impressive battery life and a secure fit, making them a good choice for workout sessions.
