When it comes to The Expanse: A Telltale Series, it is all about making choices and decisions. Everything is important, no matter how big or small it might be. More importantly, you cannot know what decisions you make will matter and which ones will not. The key part of the game is that you have to make your choices even when you have imperfect information and the story continues to move forward, regardless of the choice you make. This means that you cannot go back and choose something else to achieve a different outcome.
The decisions
The game wants you to believe that everything you do has an impact on what happens next. This applies to everything you do like choosing what to say to the crew, playing nice or being aggressive or choosing one solution over the other. You will find some game over screens, but they are usually associated with movement challenges and quick-time events.
The real focus of the game is about exploring the space around you, getting to know your crew mates, gathering information and completing optional objectives, while working towards achieving the main goal of an episode.
The character
You will play the role of space-born Camina Drummer, who is a badass, and has been exiled from her home. She is now working with a scavenger crew and is one of the most favorite characters from the TV series called The Expanse. Cara Gee is the actor who played the role and she has reprised her character in the game as well.
The story of the game takes place before that of the show, so Drummer is the only familiar cast member. Fans of the show will certainly be pleased to hear Gee once more because she does a great job and even newcomers will like her presence, but it will take them time to catch up with the rest of the story. The game does not waste a lot of time in trying to explain what is happening and prefers to throw you straight in the bad situation and expect you to work things out.
The activities
When you are not talking to other members of your crew, you have to explore abandoned or wrecked spaceships. The Artemis, the ship Drummer is on, comprises of scavengers and they have to scavenge to survive. Therefore, you have to spend a lot of time using your spacesuit’s thrusters for moving through freefall and magnet-boots for sticking to metal surfaces, or just moving up and down the hallways.
As the controls are good, you will have fun in doing the exploration, checking out different bits and pieces and it is satisfying to find some loot that can be sold. In terms of graphics, The Expanse looks good, as it has manage to strike a good balance between realistic and cartoonish. When it comes to gameplay, a Telltale Game focuses on the occasional big moment decisions and conversations that shape the story.
The Verdict
The Expanse: A Telltale Series proves to be an excellent addition in the series of games from the studio and its dialogue scenes are some of the most engaging ones.
