In the last few years, Samsung has been dominating the global foldable phone market, but enthusiasts have looked at the numerous folding phones available in China with envy. The Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo have produced some good foldable phones that are only available in China and the X Fold 2 is the third big-screen foldable that Vivo has introduced. The phone is worth noting because it comes with a polish that the current Western releases don’t come close to at all.
Design and build
In terms of design, the X Fold 2 is quite similar to the large format foldables in the market. It looks like a regular phone when closed and you can use it that way, but it is tad thick and heavy, at 12.9mm and 279g, respectively. But, it is lighter and slimmer than the previous devices from Vivo itself, but bigger and heavier than most other foldable devices.
Nonetheless, the phone feels sturdy and you can fully close the hinge. The phone is available in red, black, and blue and finished with vegan leather that boosts durability, but without ruining the premium aesthetic. Vivo has also added a physical hardware switch to the X Fold 2 for turning on its Silent mode.
Screen and speakers
AMOLED panels with a refresh rate of 120Hz have been used for the main screen and cover screen of the X Fold 2, which are 8.03-inch and 6.53-inch, respectively. This means the color quality is great and the phone works smoothly. The main screen also gets the LTPO4 tech, so the refresh rate is adjusted according to the content. The screen is also slightly portrait-oriented, which means it is less wide yet taller.
While the dreaded crease is present, you will barely feel it. Vivo has opted for the under-display fingerprint sensor, which makes it different from other foldables. There are stereo speakers for audio, one each on the top and bottom.
Specs and performance
The X Fold 2 coms with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which delivers the same performance as some of the best phones you can find in the market. There is 12GB of RAM and you can choose between 256GB and 512GB of storage. As for connectivity, you will find NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 7 and 5G support available.
Camera and video
The X Fold 2 has a triple camera setup, which is one of the most powerful out there. There are two 12Mp lenses joining the main camera, one 2x telephoto and one ultrawide. The lighting is truly exceptional. There are also punch-hole cameras given on both displays for selfies. Both are 16Mp and they are decent, so you can use whichever is convenient.
The front camera supports video at 1080p@30fps, while the rear camera can go for 4K@60fps or 8K@30fps.
The Verdict
The X Fold 2 also comes with an impressive battery life for a foldable and ships with Android 13. It is a good foldable device that proves to be the perfect combination of capable camera, good battery life and strong performance.
