Even though Immortals of Aveum is a first-person shooter, it is intriguing to learn that it is actually a gun-free zone. This sounds downright peculiar, but the developers have somehow made it work. How has Ascendant Studio accomplished this? The answer is Magic. Essentially, brightly-colored bullets are blasted from the fingertips magically. Immortals of Aveum proves to be a combination of slick FPS action and traditional high fantasy adventure and offers you everything you could possibly want in a modern shooter.
The story
You take on the role of Jak and the opening phase of the story reveals that he possesses powers of a Triarch. This means that he is an extremely rare individual because he is capable of wielding the three forms of magic of the world of Aveum simultaneously.
For a millennia, there has been a battle taking place called Everwar, which is for the control of the magic in Aveum and Jak is drafted into it, as it seems to be moving towards a rather catastrophic conclusion. While the specifics of the story sometimes get lost, but they are mostly easy to follow. You can also find plenty of optional stuff to look into, but it is not required for you to go through it to understand what is happening.
The dialogue in Aveum does not comprise of a lot of modern colloquialisms and vernacular, but using archaic language does not fit in with the environment of Aveum either because the game comes off as a modern one in the first-person shooter space.
The difficulty
It will take you over 20 hours to reach the conclusion if you play the game on default difficulty. The pace is quite nice and the game manages to strike a good balance between taking you to places you have already visited and changing the surroundings to new locations. While some spots are a bit drab and dark, most of the environments used in the game are extremely good-looking.
The good lighting plays a strong role in what makes the game so eye-catching. You will have a relatively linear experience, but some of the maps prove to be quite large and are great for exploring.
The abilities
You will find that the list of abilities that Jak possesses is quite long and they have been spread across the story. This means that things that may have confused you initially would eventually make sense. Initially,Aveum will feel plain because Jak has limited abilities, but he gains more interesting abilities and attacks as the story moves forward.
As far as the finger guns are concerned, they are quite fun and they are divided into three categories. Red magic attacks are a shotgun, green ones are rapid fire SMG rounds and the blue ones function as a large caliber pistol. The beams are extremely potent and there is even one that combines all three colors.
The Verdict
You will find Immortals of Aveum to be a very confident first-person shooter that boasts spellcasting combat and is excellent to look at.
