For over three decades, Mortal Kombat has been severing heads and ripping spines, but the series has now seen a dramatic shift in its gameplay with the Mortal Kombat 1. It now comes with player expression that was not seen before due to the new Kameo system in which characters can now have access to tools they were not designed to have. A unique and dynamic fighting system has been created that gives you room for some really wild setups and combos.
The changes
One thing that has been seen in every Mortal Kombat game recently is that each is very different from the previous one, but manages to retain the distinct feel of Mortal Kombat itself. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are some changes in this year’s version, even without the Kameo system. First off, the meter management goes back to a single meter that controls the breakers, enhanced special moves and jumps. There are no character variations, no invincibility on starting up and more.
The changes are good and smart and they help the action in Mortal Kombat 1 feel significantly fresh. But, it is the Kameo system that remains the biggest addition. The game allows you to choose a second character that you can call upon for assistance in a fight and this has never happened before.
The Kameo system
Each Kameo comes with their own meter and they have three assist moves each that allows you to add more tools to their repertoire. It is a great opportunity for players to add another layer to their offense and this makes things more interesting.
You can use Kameos for extending combos that would not be possible otherwise. In fact, it also gives a chance for some specialized uses. For instance, you can give your character the ability to teleport, or retreat full distance quickly, or not suffer from projectiles.
The story mode
Another new beginning for Mortal Kombat 1 is the story mode, which feels satisfying. It is not a timeline reset; instead, they have re-written the entire history. The characters get backstories, brand-new looks, powers and relationships. The story takes place eons after Mortal Kombat 11 when the Hourglass of Time was used by Fire God Liu King for reshaping the universe.
There is peace in Earthrealmand Queen Sindel fairly rules the Outworld. While the Mortal Kombat tournament still takes place, it is more for honor and pride than realm invasion. Eventually, outside forces do threaten the peace and things get real very quickly. The players and writings are truly exceptional this time around.
While the gameplay innovations remain the same, but it is six hours of campaigning in all the best ways. Invasions is the new single-player mode that has been added. It comes with some battles and RPG elements, but it tries to do too many things at once. The combat proves to be really engaging and excellent and it keeps you on your toes until the end.
The Verdict
Mortal Kombat 1 proves to be another wonderful addition to the popular series and while it does have issues, the changes make up for it big time.
