The Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a creators’ laptop that has been developed for creating, editing and watching movies and then scribbling notes on the screen. It has excellent performance potential, but does come with a hefty price tag.
Configurations
It should be noted that the price of the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 depends on the configurations. You can find a 13th-gen Core i7 that comes with basic Iris Xe graphics, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. There are also versions with 32GB and 64GB RAM and expansive storage options of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
There are also graphics options which include integrated graphics, RTX 4050, RTX 4060 or NvidiaGeForce RTX 2000. A number of aspects of the Surface Laptop Studio 2 are similar to its predecessor. This includes the resolution and size of the display, chassis dimensions and some other aspects. It is also slightly heavier and thicker and comes with two new ports, which include a microSDXC and USB-A slot.
Experience
One of the most distinguishing features of this device that you will hardly find on others is the pull-forward, inclined display. It makes a clear distinction between play and work. When you set it back, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 looks like an ordinary notebook, but when you pull it forward, the display inclines.
It is immediately transformed into a device designed for media consumption and this is where it delivers an unparalleled experience because no other laptop will offer you this feature. Microsoft has not made compromises in speaker quality and it shows. The chassis contains four Omnisonic speakers that face the top and they deliver quite the punch, especially with Dolby Atmos support. They are loud and bright and sound fantastic as compared to other laptop speakers.
The display is nowhere near conventional. There are two color modes due to the PixelSense Flow display, while there is a refresh rate of 120Hz and a resolution of 2400×1600, which is great for inking and content creation. You can also fold the display until it is flat if you want to do some inking.
New features
The guts of the laptop have been refreshed in this model, which includes the addition of the two new ports. There is Bluetooth 5.3 support, along with Wi-Fi 6e and the memory has also been improved to LPDDR5X. The Surface 2 itself is quite solid, as it weighs about 4.37 pounds and has an anodized aluminum chassis. It is available in just Platinum color.
It also comes with side-mounted venting due to the aggressive CPU and RTX GPU. In regular use, you will find the laptop to be whisper quiet and fan-less, but the fan gets real loud really quick when you are playing games. You can store the Surface Slim Pen 2 magnetically under the bottom of the device, but it has to be purchased separately.
The Verdict
Even though it has a unique design, the price tag of the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is still very hefty, which does not make it suitable for the average user. However, if you will make use of its unique features, then it is a good investment.
