Huawei does not only make phone and laptops; it has introduced plenty of headphones. The latest wireless earbuds that the company has introduced are the FreeBuds 5 that boast a rather unusual design. Not only do they have a different shape, but they also come with a surprising range of features and specs for their reasonable price.
Design and Build
The FreeBuds 5 are curved in every possible direction and they look as if someone solidified mercury in mid-air, especially whenyou check out the Silver color. Other options include Coral Orange and Ceramic White. It is not just so they look different, but also to ensure they fit comfortably. They might look comfortable, but they definitely are and they also stay secure in your ears.
The touch controls that Huawei has added are a bit flaky, but the charging case is quite impressive and appears to be similar to a tiny UFO given its rounded shape.
Sound Quality and ANC
The sound quality of the FreeBuds 5 will also take you by surprise. They come with 11mm dual-magnetic dynamic drivers that have a frequency range of 16Hz to 40kHzand Bluetooth 5.2. The lower end is the most prominent, as bass sounds excellent. You can actually feel the bass rather than hearing it. The tuning is balanced quite well, which works great with EDM (electronic dance music).
The good thing about the FreeBuds 5 is that you do not even to turn up the volume for them to sound good and there is no distortion, even when you turn it up. Even though they are cheap, the earbuds also come with some unique features. They come with Triple Adaptive EQ, which means they can make adjustments to the sound based on wearing status, ear canal and volume.
There is also a wear sensor that automatically pauses playback when you take one or both out. There are also four profiles that let you control the ‘sound effects’. These are default, voices, treble boost and bass boost. It is also possible to create a custom profile. The AI Life app also gives you the opportunity to give priority to the sound quality or the connection quality.
Active noise cancelling is also worth noting because the Open-Fit ANC 3.0 is very impressive. It can be switched on and off and it adjusts based on your surroundings, which is great.
Battery Life and Charging
According to Huawei, the FreeBuds 5 can give you five hours of battery, which may not be tremendous, but it is quite reasonable. When you factor in the case, they give you a total of 30 hours of battery. This performance is quite decent for most users. But, if you have ANC on, their battery will drop faster and you will get a total of 20 hours. The earbuds take 20 minutes to charge in the case, while the case itself takes 40 minutes to charge through USB-C, or you ca also charge them wirelessly.
The Verdict
Given their bizarre shape, it is surprising how impressive the FreeBuds 5 really are, especially when you consider their price tag.
