If you are looking for reliable and digestible entertainment, The Last Faith can prove to be a good choice. It lets you enjoy 2D platforming via non-linear and big maps and you can navigate the obstacles by unlocking new ways. The boss fights are quite challenging and you get to explore a dark post-apocalyptic world that needs to be saved. The game does come with some interesting flourishes, such as flashy spells and a bunch of clever weapons.
The story
The Last Faith will take you around 15 hours give or take to journey through its dilapidated manors, fetid crypts and snowy cities. The story begins in the same way that most of the games that are inspired by Souls do; with an outside entity granting some super power to some of the worst people and they use it for condemning their surroundings and turning them into a nightmare.
While the plot does not have anything interesting to offer, the macabre mood is definitely satisfying. Instead of the Catholic body horror, The Last Faith had opted for a setting that will remind you of the Victorian era that comes with some of the most traditional baddies that are starved for blood. Most of the environments are quite nice, but not all of them are memorable and unique. You have to slice, shoot and stab your way through most locations and these are usually a deep cavern or a big house.
The pacing
When it comes to pacing, you will find that The Last Faith tends to fluctuate because it goes from a brisk pace to a slog, mostly because the difficulty level goes up at times. Some of the sections feel very old school and simple because they involve the typical hack and slash, but in other sections, you will come across scenarios that are perfectly designed to cause destruction. However, the challenge is definitely fun.
The monsters you come across are quite ferocious, particularly when they are in groups. There can be a lot of chaos when they are combined with environmental hazards, such as mystery liquid puddles, or statues breathing fire.
The bosses
Once every section comes to an end, you will find bosses waiting for you to challenge your reflexes and patience, even if they do not really challenge your imagination. This is the moment where your skills are tested, but you will find that most of the puzzles are pretty standard. The good thing about The Last Faith is that you do not feel lost when figuring out where to go next. This is because sections have been divided in terms of abilities you will acquire when you make progress.
This makes it easier for players to figure out where they need to go. Bear in mind that The Last Faith’s map will not offer you any help. This means that you will not know where you left your resources where you die. However, it is the combat where The Last Faith stands out the most because the selection of weapons really makes things interesting.
The Verdict
If you like dark and bloody games, The Last Faith will be right up your alley and it can be an excellent action game for fans of the genre.
