The Fire HD 10 tablet is Amazon’s 12th-gen refresh that offers improved specifications as compared to the previous model that was released back in 2021. The Android tablet boasts a faster processor and there have also been some improvements in cameras. The 5Mp front-facing camera and 5Mp main sensor are now capable of recording 1080p Full HD video rather than 720p and this will make Zoom calls clearer.
Design and build
The Fire HD 10 has a very basic design, which means there are no frills. It is matt plastic that does not have any metallic edges or accents, only Amazon’s logo on the back. It feels and looks cheap and is available in lilac, black and ocean blue. The good thing about the tablet is that it is lightweight and you can hold it comfortably in one hand. You can do so in both landscape and portrait mode. There are two speakers on the top edge, while the right-hand edge has the volume rocker, power key, headphone jack and USB port. There is a microSD card on the bottom edge if you want to expand storage.
Screen and speakers
The 10.1-inch display of the Amazon Fire HD 10 is nicely detailed and has a 1920 x 1200 resolution. It also supports USI active stylus technology and the stylus display is also quite good. The brightness of the screen is reasonable, nothing too special and that is not surprising, given it is a budget tablet. The stereo speakers also deliver decent sound and are actually good at delivering movie and TV sounds and dialogue rather than music.
Specs and performance
The Fire HD 10 has been developed for reading books, light web browsing and streaming media. It boasts the MediaTek 8-core processor, which Amazon claims is 25% faster than the previous one. You get both 32GB and 64GB storage options. The tablet also comes with a game mode in which notifications are hidden and Alexa is disabled temporarily to deliver optimal performance.
The Silk browser also runs very smoothly, even when you have more than 10 tabs open. It jumps between processes and apps quickly, but may struggle sometimes. As far as wireless connectivity is concerned, it offers you Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 5, which is fast enough for streaming music and video.
Cameras
The main camera of the Fire HD 10 is good enough for taking passable pictures when there is sufficient natural light. The front-facing camera works for selfies and video calls and it has a rudimentary interface that might be a bit difficult to get used to. But, video calls do see some improvement because of Full HD video.
Battery Life
The battery life of the Amazon Fire HD 10 is also quite decent, as it is capable of delivering 13 hours, which is enough power to serve most purposes. It does take four hours to charge, which is a bit disappointing.
The Verdict
The Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is a decent Android tablet that you can get for a very nice price, especially if you are already part of the Amazon ecosystem.
