The largest tablet from Amazon aimed at kids boasts a chunky plastic case, but the exterior armor is not the only protection it provides. The software of the tablet is also locked into Amazon Kids and there are parental controls already added, which means parents do not have to worry when the tablet is in the hands of their little ones.
Design and build
The positioning of the buttons on the Amazon tablet is a bit disconcerting, as they have been neatly grouped on one end of the tablet. These include the headphone socket, the volume rocker, and charging port and lock switch. Considering that the tablet is to be used horizontally, the positioning works. The front camera is also found on the long edge and the built-in stand of the case holds it horizontally, so it makes sense that the buttons are grouped on one end.
The design of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is fairly bland, even though you can find some jazzy cases. The edges of the screen are covered by the case, but it has very thick bezels despite it. The stands holds up the tablet in an excellent position and it is integrated quite nicely. Since the tablet is made for media consumption, it is a good fit and very easy to hold with the case. The tablet itself is light and slender, so small hands can grasp it easily. The stand can also convert into a carrying handle, so it can easily be taken around.
Screen and speakers
The Fire HD 10 Kids Pro does not give any complaints in terms of touchscreen, as it is responsive and bright and it is great for streaming videos and looking at colorful pictures. The aspect ratio and size of the screen means you can hold it at a distance and not squint at it, but it does not have anything special where technology is concerned like OLED. The colorful and sharp screen scan satisfy young users.
The speakers attached to the tablet are quite reasonable. The built-in speakers deliver a decent amount of volume and it even has some bass presence that adds some thickness to the sound.
Specs and performance
The MT8183 chipset from MediaTek is an entry-level one and it is included in this tablet because it is designed to be used for media consumption rather than work-related activities, or top-end gaming. It boasts eight cores, which makes it power-efficient and there is 3GB of RAM. While it does not compare to the Snapdragon chips used in flagship devices, it delivers a decent performance. The tablet only gives access to the Amazon app store and the games work just fine.
Cameras
The back of the tablet has a 5Mp sensor, which is acceptable, but nothing close to a modern phone camera. The front camera is 2Mp and this is fine for a fun selfie or video call, but the colors are washed out.
The Verdict
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is a cost-effective and convenient option for parents to deliver gaming and video to their kids.
