One look at Ayaneo Kun shows that it has drawn inspiration from the Steam Deck. With its big 8.4-inch screen and the dual trackpads, the two share a visible resemblance. However, it has become one of the most powerful Windows gaming handhelds available today because of the newer hardware, a huge 75 watt hour battery and a 54-watt TDP.
Design and Features
The Kun has been termed as the ‘big screen’ handheld device by Ayaneo. The device is wider and longer than any other device it is competing with in the market, as it measures 12.29 x 5.22 x 0.86 inches. The space is certainly well-utilized, as it comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, which is vivid and bright and definitely feels like a big screen in the world of handhelds.
There are two touchpads that flank the screen, which make navigation easy. There is also a webcam on the left side of the screen, which might not be too good, but can be used for biometric login. The grips also have four programmable built into the rear. The inside of the bumpers also have two extra shoulder buttons.
Similar to other Ayaneo products, this one follows a standard controller layout, which is very similar to an Xbox gamepad. The right is where you will find the ABXY buttons, triggers, bumpers and joysticks. But, the D-Pad is no longer a cross, but a circle now. The diagonals are easier, but it is less snappy than previous models.
Other Ayaneo features have also returned like the triggers and hall effects joysticks. Rather than mechanical connections, they use magnetic sensors, which improves durability. The integrated fingerprint reader is also included and two built-in gyroscopes have been added for motion control.
The upgrades
Since it is designed to be a top-tier handheld device, Ayaneo has also made some major upgrades under the hood. They have increased the battery size, so it is now a huge 75 watt-hours one, which is the biggest to be included in any Windows device. It is almost 50% larger than any of its competitors in the market, which is undoubtedly impressive. The 54-watt maximum TDP refers to the amount of power that goes to the processor.
It is able to handle everything from in-game graphics to spreadsheets and is significantly higher than the competition, which is offering 35-watts. In addition, Ayaneo has also come up with a new cooling system for its handheld and it enables the device to work comfortably even at such high wattages.
The processor and speakers
The AMD Ryzen 7 7840U, which is also used in 2S and Air 1S, has also been used in Kun. It comes with 16 threads and 8 cores and the maximum boost clock speed stands at 5.12GHz. While the system does not have a dedicated GPU, the integrated Radeon 780M graphics are super-fast.
The speakers are also quite good, as they are full-bodied and clear, which allows you to not justplay games, but also watch movies.
The Verdict
When you take the entire package into account, there is no doubt that the Ayaneo Kun is the best Windows handheld devices that can be found today, even if it is a bit pricey.
